Trump’s strained Iran war speech as polls sink and oil prices bite

In a strained prime-time address, Donald Trump attempted to reassure Americans about the war with Iran — but the speech instead deepened questions about a conflict now entering its second month.

Delivered from the White House, the 20-minute address came as fuel prices surge and public support for the war weakens. Critics say the president offered little new detail on strategy while insisting victory was close.

Promises of Progress, but Few Details

Trump claimed US objectives were “nearing completion” after more than a month of fighting.

Those goals include preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, crippling its naval forces and degrading missile capabilities. Yet analysts note similar optimism has appeared before in US wars — including the infamous early victory declaration during the Iraq War.

Trump predicted the conflict could last “two to three more weeks”, a timeline that military experts view as highly uncertain.

Contradictions Over Iran’s Nuclear Programme

Confusion over war aims sharpened after comments earlier in the day when Trump appeared to downplay Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles.

Speaking about underground nuclear material, he said: “That’s so far underground, I don’t care about that.”

The remark jarred with repeated White House messaging that stopping Iran’s nuclear capability is the core objective of the war.

Oil Shock Hits Home

Meanwhile, economic pressure is building rapidly. Petrol prices in the United States have climbed to roughly $4 per gallon — the highest since the shock triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The surge is closely tied to turmoil in the Strait of Hormuz, through which about one-fifth of global oil flows. Iran has threatened or disrupted shipping in the corridor, sending markets into panic.

Trump dismissed the spike as temporary, saying the strait would “open up naturally” once the war ends.

Allies Pressured, But Holding Back

The president also urged Western allies to intervene more aggressively in the Gulf.

He called on NATO members, including the United Kingdom and European Union, to secure oil flows and buy more US energy exports.

So far, European governments have shown little appetite for deeper military involvement.

Polling Turns Against the War

The political backdrop is worsening. With US midterm elections approaching, several polls show declining confidence in Trump’s handling of the crisis.

A recent survey by CNN found only about one-third of Americans believe the president has a clear plan for Iran.

For a war meant to project strength, the speech instead highlighted the growing pressure facing the White House — abroad and at home.
