The Deer Hunter

Featured Replies

Hi, my wife and I are taking a vacation in Thailand next year and while we are in Bangkok, we intend to visit Patpong, which was used in the filming location of The Deer Hunter starring Robert De Niro.

One of my hobbies is finding the filming locations of some of my favourite films which include The Deer Hunter. I was wondering if anyone might be able to pinpoint some of the locations used? I have a website at http://www.filminglocationsdetectives.com/...eer_Hunter2.htm

which has all the stills from the movie. This will help me out considerably with my pre-planning.

Kind regards

Roly

p.s does anyone know off other movies which were filmed in Bangkok?

Just had a look at your web site.

I'm not sure there is a river in Thailand called the "Kiwi" , are sure it isn't the Kwai as in another reasonably famous film about Thailand though made in Sri Lanka.

The idea of a river Kiwi did give me a chuckle.

Ohh aren't you a brainy one. Be far this has to be the cleverest excuse I have heard so far :o

I think several Jean Claude VanDamme action movies were shot in Thailand. Go to the imdb website and they have all kinds of trivia about that.

Good fight scenes, though.

One of our mods, Sabaijai appeared in The Deer Hunter as an extra and he mentioned some of the locations in the film (St. Dcominic school, Sai Yok, etc) in this thread.

How does Patpong differ? As I have never been to Thailand, what would I need to look out for apart from the Go Go bars?

Thanks will have a look at the thread

Part of the Killing Fields was filmed at the Sofitel (previously the Railway Hotel) Hua Hin, about 2 hrs South of Bangkok...

The bar scene in "The Deerhunter" was shot in the Mississippi Queen, which became Erotica , which became part of Gold Finger's which I have not been in so I would think it is not the same.

Good fight scenes, though.

The bit at the end where he singlehandedly takes on that giant of a man and about 100 other caucasians is nothing short of pure nationalist Thai fantasy. It's every Thai man's wet dream.

The film does give us a glimpse into the Thai mentality though; evil Chinese businessmen in league with evil Westerners thwarted by the honest hardworking Thai.

Goebbels would have been proud.

######. That says it all :o

'James Bond Island' is in Phang Nga Bay OP and I think bits of Apocalypse Now were filmed in Thailand

As suggested if you go to imdb and select location data {see Link} you'll be able to find others.

They include James Bond's Man with the Golden Gun & at short notice {since Vietnam refused permits} Tomorrow Never Dies, also the remake {with Jackie Chan} of Around the World in 80 days.

Regards

PS AFAIK none of Apocalypse Now was shot here in Thailand

It was shot in the Phillipines

Correct, and 'The Beach' was mainly shot in Ang Thon' Marine park, Koh Lantra and a wee bit in Phi Phi.

The last series of British TV drama 'auf wiedersehen pet' was shot in partly in Thailand. Jimmy Nail & co seen walking down Soi Cowboy was truly inspired..

Yes love, I am off to do some serious research in Patpong.... :D Good stuff, wish I had thought of it :o

A trip to Phi Phi is worth it even if not too much was filmed there IMO

Amazingly I just bought the Deerhunter DVD at Robinson's for 79 baht or less if I remember correctly. It is a legal version too! Sometimes you find good movies in the strangest places!

Teacup, my wife has not a clue really, I will tell her I’m going to the museums which will bore her to death and hopefully she won’t wonder why I come back with a smile on my face!
