Four Cambodian products gain GI status

Cambodia has added four more items to its growing list of products with Geographical Indication (GI) status, a move designed to protect local producers and boost the country’s reputation on the global stage.

The Ministry of Commerce confirmed that the registrations were completed on 3 April. The newly recognised products are:

  • Phnom Srok Golden Silk – handwoven silk renowned for its fine, glossy fibres and natural dyes.

  • Koh Kong Mud Crab – a prized saltwater crab from mangrove areas, valued for its firm texture and rich flavour.

  • Kampong Thom Cashew Nut – large kernels with a crisp bite and buttery taste.

  • Oddar Meanchey Mango – juicy fruit with a balanced sweet-sour flavour, suitable for processing.

Officials say GI status helps protect intellectual property, ensuring names are used correctly and preventing imitation. It also preserves traditional techniques, supports tourism and strengthens market value, paving the way for international recognition.

The ministry highlighted that GI registration not only safeguards cultural heritage but also enhances competitiveness by linking products to their unique geographical origins. This, it said, can attract visitors to production areas and encourage environmentally responsible practices.

Cambodia has already secured GI status for several flagship products, including Kampot pepper, Kampong Speu palm sugar, Mondulkiri wild honey and Siem Reap prahok. The latest additions underline the government’s push to expand protection and promote Khmer goods abroad.

By strengthening the identity of its products, Cambodia hopes to carve out a stronger position in global markets, while giving local communities the tools to defend their traditions and benefit economically from their craft.
