Pink ID & Driving License (Possible Insurance issues)?

Hi AN members,

Thinking out loud / out the box here... As we all know things in Thailand are never straightforward, leaving things up in the air or for speculation for lack of better terms, especially when it comes to enforcement by officials. Usually never a big thing, until... <deleted> hits the fan...

Let's assume one is using Pink ID Card (with Pink ID card number + both Thai & English name) on front of driving license and at backside there's NO driving restriction mentioned (seems that this misinterpretation about restriction on driving only in Pink ID card issue province has been lifted now for most DLT's, with the exception of few in Chonburi do issue DL's without any driving restriction on back when using Pink ID).

All good would one say or ...? Well, has anyone ever thought on the below?

1. What if you have a serious accident
(or any accident for that matter where police and private Insurance gets involved) in a province outside of your registered province. Would the Insurance company reject your claim because you have a driving license based on Pink ID card for ID verification. Keeping also in mind that your Pink ID is not actually valid for ID verification in another province?

Would the insurance use this against you? Or would your passport be accepted in lieu when traveling in another province? But here's the catch ... there's no passport number on DL matching (only your pink ID card number).

Does anyone has experience with this police or either insurance when having an accident and DL issued based on pink ID in another province?

2. Has anyone with a DL issued with Pink ID number has any issues when requesting an international driving license later on? I heard the international driving license is based on passport number only. But when traveling abroad you need to show both international driving license with your passport number and your local license with Pink ID card number. But you will be using passport as means of identification at police abroad. Is this legal? What about insurance?

Am I overly thinking things here ... :)

Best regards,

You're over thinking it, if you have a thai driving licence, that's all you need. Pink ID is irrelevant, next you'll be asking about the yellow book 😃

Passport no should be on your driving locrnse. Pink card only verifies your address , instesd of COR, on application and should not appear on license.

May I add that all 3, 2 cards and 1 passport, have your portrait on them for some extra verification?

I have a driving licence with my Thai ID number and no driving restrictions. The licence before this one had restrictions.I wanted the Thai ID number instead of my passport number because my home country is so frustrating—they only issue passports with five years' validity. But I never thought about it the way you do; I think you're overthinking it. If something happens, I’ll only hand over my licence, that's for sure. If they ask for my pink ID, they'll probably just look at it. I don't think they'll conclude that my licence isn't valid outside Bangkok, even if it's my home province.BTW, I’ve shown both my licence and pink ID in several other provinces besides Bangkok. At checkpoints, the policemen just smile and say, 'Happy journey!'

AFAIK Pink ID has nothing to do with DL. It is not even meant for retirees/married/business visa/permit to stay holders. It was created for laborers from neighboring countries and therefore it is limited to the province where it was issued, as holders of such ID's are supposed to ask for permission before they travel out of the province where they are registered.

The main issue would probably not be insurance or police inside Thailand, as long as the Thai driving licence is valid and has no restriction printed on it. If the DLT issued the licence without a provincial restriction, then that is the licence you are legally driving on.

The possible complication is later, if you want an international driving permit. Since an IDP is normally linked to your passport for use abroad, a Thai licence issued with a pink ID number could create a mismatch. That does not automatically mean it is invalid, but it could mean extra questions at the DLT office, or in the worst case they may require the driving licence record to be based on your passport number before issuing the IDP.

my DL has my passport # on it

I don't think you understand the point that the op is making.

If you use your pink id card when applying for a driving licence then they may place a restriction on it which, according to google translate, says you can only use the licence outside of the issuing province provided you have permission to travel outside of the province.

So.... if you travel outside of the province without permission and have an accident, would this invalidate your insurance?

I've never seen anywhere where they explain just what type of permission you need or where you can obtain it.

Exactly, go to the transport office and ask, they will laugh at you

I have pink ID and yellow book and use the ID number on my Thai driving licence (no restrictions), I also use the same ID on my car insurance (Roojai) instead of my passport number. Last year I got an International Driving Permit at the Land Transport Dept in Bangkok linked to the Thai driving licence using the ID number. Last September I rented a car in the UK (Thrifty) using my Thai driving licence (easier than using a UK driving licence) and they never even asked for the IDP.

In all the above I have experienced super easy processes with no problems or issues raised at any point.
