Inflation in the Philippines has severely impacted the country’s poorest households, with the rate climbing to 8.5% in April. This increase, reported by the Philippine Statistics Authority on May 5, is a significant jump from 4.2% in March and eclipses the national inflation rate of 7.2%. The surge is largely driven by spikes in food, transport, and utility costs.

Inflation rates for low-income groups have accelerated, particularly affecting essential items such as rice, fish, and vegetables. Food prices alone saw an 8.5% increase, with rice up by 15.3% and fish by 11.1%. These increases have caused the average inflation rate for low-income households from January to April to rise to 4.2%.

Housing, water, electricity, gas, and transport costs have also risen, exacerbating the financial strain on these households. Transport inflation has surged to 19.5%, while utility costs have climbed 9.9%. As these households spend predominantly on necessities, the price hikes have intensified economic pressures.

The impact of inflation is more pronounced outside Metro Manila, where rates for low-income groups hit 8.5% in April. In Metro Manila, the rate increased to 5.2% from 3.4% in March. The upward trend underscores the heavier burden of rising prices on the poorest sections of society.

Looking ahead, financial analysts expect continued pressure on lower-income households due to persistently high costs in essential sectors. The government is urged to implement targeted measures to alleviate the burden on these communities.
