US-backed IOM project aids Cambodia border recovery

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), in partnership with the US government, has launched a recovery initiative to support communities affected by recent conflict along the Cambodia–Thailand border.

The programme, unveiled on 30 April in Choam Ksan district of Preah Vihear province, combines emergency shelter assistance with livelihood restoration and longer-term resilience measures. As part of its first phase, 350 shelter repair kits were distributed to vulnerable households, with labour support provided to ensure repairs were carried out safely and with dignity.

The initiative, titled Advancing Peace and Stability for Crisis-Affected Communities in Cambodia, aims to strengthen recovery and stability in border provinces by addressing urgent humanitarian, economic and social needs. It also supports displaced carpenters with toolkits and training, enabling them to rebuild their livelihoods while contributing to community-level rehabilitation.

Further assistance is expected to expand into Oddar Meanchey and Banteay Meanchey provinces, following consultations with local authorities.

Benjamin Chiang, chargé d’affaires ad interim at the US embassy in Phnom Penh, said the programme reflects Washington’s commitment to the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords and to helping crisis-affected communities recover. “Access to safe shelter and support for quickly rebuilding livelihoods are critical for displaced families’ safety, well-being, and dignity, and an important step in restoring stability,” he noted.

IOM’s chief of mission in Cambodia, Nellie Ghusayni, emphasised that the project was designed to move beyond immediate humanitarian aid. “By combining assistance with longer-term support for livelihoods, services and community infrastructure, we are helping families get back on their feet, restore their dignity and reduce the risks associated with prolonged displacement,” she explained.

The IOM stressed that needs continue to evolve, and both the agency and the US government remain committed to scaling up support for durable recovery across Cambodia’s border provinces.
