Thailand Moves to Rein In Cannabis Sales

Thailand’s Public Health Minister says the government has no plan to legalise recreational cannabis and is preparing tighter rules for the industry. A new cannabis and hemp bill is being fast-tracked to regulate cultivation sites, farms, prescriptions, and sales more strictly. Around 12,000 licensed cannabis shops are still operating, but thousands of licences are expected to expire between 2026 and 2028. Officials say cannabis outlets will eventually need to transition into medical facilities staffed by recognised medical professionals. The minister warned that unauthorised sales or allowing cannabis use in entertainment venues could lead to immediate arrest.
