An occupational health expert has called for limits on outdoor work hours across the Philippines due to extreme heat, advising a maximum of two to three hours to prevent heat-related illnesses. Dr. Abdul Javar Esturco, president of the PCOM-Zamboanga Peninsula Chapter, made this announcement during a press conference in Makati City. He warned that prolonged exposure could impact workers' health and productivity.

Esturco emphasized the importance of taking measures to protect workers, particularly in industries with outdoor tasks like construction. He suggested that employers provide cooling stations and rotate shifts to minimize heat exposure. Heat can cause muscle cramps and exhaustion, and Esturco highlighted that some workers may compromise hydration by avoiding breaks.

Workers are advised to stay hydrated, consuming up to three liters of water daily, especially men. Esturco pointed out that scheduling should be rationalized to avoid long continuous shifts in high temperatures. This is crucial in preventing health risks associated with relentless heat exposure.

Looking ahead, employers are expected to implement these guidelines to safeguard their workforce. By adjusting work hours and providing adequate breaks, the risk of heat-induced health issues can be significantly reduced.
