This initiative, driven by Resolution 09, aims to increase the city’s urban rail system to 200 km by 2030. Currently, the city operates the 20-km Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien line, opened in late 2024.Get today's headlines by email The plan includes several ongoing projects: the 11 km Ben Thanh-Tham Luong line and the 6 km Ben Thanh-Thu Thiem underground section. The largest is the 54 km Ben Thanh-Can Gio line, scheduled for completion in 2028, being developed by VinSpeed. Designed to reach speeds of 350 kph, it will link the city center to Can Gio, enhancing access to a Vingroup resort.A new airport line, the 48 km Thu Thiem-Long Thanh link, is expected to begin soon, aiming for completion by July 2025. It will connect the city's core to Long Thanh International Airport, aligning with Vietnam's airport expansion efforts. Three additional lines are planned this year, including routes extending into former Binh Duong Province and links to Tan Son Nhat airport. These developments, priced at approximately $17 billion, depend on private investment, with Vingroup's Can Gio project encouraging domestic financial support. The focus is on alleviating congestion and pollution, targeting the metro to handle up to 60% of city trips by 2045.In addition to rail, the city plans to enhance transport logistics, improve connections between seaports and industrial zones, and construct robust flood defenses. These measures aim to support Ho Chi Minh City’s growth and address environmental challenges.Join the discussion? Adapted by ASEAN Now · VN Express · 28 May 2026
