What Day is Today?: Thailand-Life causes me to forget almost everything?

Dear Folks,

Life here in Thailand is very strange, compared to life in the Tri-State area….(NYC-NJ-Philly)...

When I lived in the USA, I was easily able to recall the date, the day, the year, and who was President of the USA….

But, after setting up my digs in Thailand, dates, times, even years, and especially “who might be the USA Prez”....seems to matter very little to me.

I am not saying that this effect is necessarily bad for most of us.

I am only saying that, once in a while, people will ask me:  Where are you? What day is it today? Have you eaten?

The worst problem for me is when they continually ask me:  Have you Eaten? My response is….to ask….:  Eaten WHAT, exactly?

In Thailand, everybody thinks it is just …..  SO POLITE to ask others what they have eaten.

In Thai, this translates into: กินข้าวหรือยัง

Every time someone asks me this question I invariably reply:

NO.

I have NOT eaten today, thus far.

In fact, I am so hungry that I could….EAT A HORSE….

Do you ever do this, too?

Just asking.

And, how do you keep the days straight, after moving to Thailand?

Best regards,

Gamma

It is the day before tomorrow.. I have tried horse but wouldnt recommend it

You haven't been back to the states in a long time, so are out of touch, especially if you don't have any children back home like I do, and have visited almost yearly and planning to live back there soon.

I've been through 13 presidents since birth, and not being political, just see how things work out, as every one has done some good and bad. As far as dates, it's still the same, as i have a daughter here who goes to school, so the days follow each other as they did back home with other children, holidays and things done.

No worries about eating, as i do that 5 times a day and it's always been a part of a regimen.

Ooooh you are so lucky getting the rubbish picked up. We have to burn our paper/packaging/light plastic, but only after 5pm.

The other stuff goes to a Wongamat Rubbish Centre on my way to Makro. I got Bht 93 last time for beer bottles, can and some other broken electrical stuff.

At least you do not have to know what day of the week it is if you post here on AN every day, like we both do.

But to make things easier, ceasefire on Mondays, bombing on Tuesdays, Wednesday is another 1000 word document, Thursday is obliteration, Friday a Memorandum of Agreements is written, Saturday they rest for the weekend, Monday.....start over again.

Listen to the words to The Scaffold's song Today's Monday! Is everybody happy? You bet your life we are.

Is the reason you do not know the date here, is because in USA they put the month before the day, so we don't know whether the twin tower attacks were on 11th September or 9th November.

Today is another unique day with 24 hours in it. If you have not eaten today then do not worry about it. Very normal occurrence. You can simply do it another day. You will probably get about 45 more 24 hour days just like this one where you can continue to ignore eating altogether before you run out of opportunities to eat something. After that, whether you have eaten or not will become completely irrelevant anyway. Something to look forward to.

Staying busy will keep you mentally sharper. Do something, anything. Volunteer to teach kids English, pick up plastic and take it to a recycler, start a community garden, something, anything, don't just let the mold take over your brain.

Get yourself a 'hard to tell' ladyboy, and he/she will make sure to wake you up and

will help you to remember a whole lot more that what day today is...

Following news, family and tv programs back home keeps me updated about which day it is.

Family group on social media where we share daily happenings keeps us all updated. And with 3 babies from 1 month to 9 months, there is no lack of feed and new stages reached.

My best friend also has dementia, at 69, and has had it for at least 3 years now. He's been a daily drinker all his life, and one day fell and hit his head. They brought him to the hospital and then to an assisted care facility, and he's now living in the second one. This man, very intelligent, has to ask me if I'm living in Texas at least three times during phone conversations. He used to walk everywhere, and now stays in the facility, coming out to visit his sister close by. Total turnaround of what he was before and very sad.

This is all well and good.....
However...

In my view, this topic is not about DEMENTIA....

Nor do I think that it is about AMNESIA....

In my view, this topic is about moving to the BUSH....

Or the jungle,

In Thailand, and not needing to know what day it is.

Why would we want to know, especially, anyway?

Also, why would we want to know who is Prez of the USA?

Would that help use to be happier campers in Thailand?

Maybe it is really just best to forget these inconsequential details.

And not worry about our lack of interest in things that really do not matter.

I suspect, like me, you forgot Harry Truman, the guy who dropped the A-bomb.

I did go back every year for Mom & kids but, every year, I felt more like a homeless tourist. I think you'd have great trouble adjusting to life back there in the present-day. It ain't the 60s anymore.

I make my kids visit me. They have great jobs and everybody wants to come to Thailand, right? That means I see them less often than I'd like to but, realistically, having a houseguest for more than a week is a burden, no matter how much you love them.

And if you do go back to that place which is no longer home, what about your young daughter here? You may feel you've left your American kids in the lurch long ago but you don't want to do the same with your Thai daughter.

Don't mean to intrude on your personal life, just thinking out loud.

Hey, we're retired! We have absolutely no need to know the days of the week. Every day is enjoyable.

I mark appts on my paper calendar and never miss them (pathologically early which means I often wait, bring a book!).

I wasn't around when they dropped the bombs, but we had that history in school. It ended the war and saved lives, but was horrendous to many innocents. I've been there 4 times since I left, and it'll always be home. I left in 2018, so it's still much the same, besides a lot of houses put into the wrong places in Texas.

I'm a hunter and fisherman, and it's light years better there than here, so that's another reason I miss it besides my family.

I'm not leaving Thailand without my daughter, and she's the reason I'm still here, to negotiate the money for my house and to have her totally with me in Texas, where she'll be much better off than living here. My youngest was 19 when I left Texas, and all are out doing their own things.

I couldn't, as they're from Texas, and I was living there when both were in office.

Haven't notice Swensen's Tuesday for about a month, as member card (2 for 1 scoops) expired last month.

Planning an O&A, and I know it will start on Sun or Mon, next week or weeks, sometime, as preferred time to drive.

Have to think about what month or year it is, too many times. Someone mention 'Memorial Day' on FB, after the fact, as I missed that one, and Easter this year. Usually don't remember unless someone mentions, Yank holidays.

I remember Thai holidays more than Yank holidays, as plan O&A away from Thai holidays, long weekends. Even O&A, I usually don't plan next accommodation till the night before. Take life one day at a time, with only a ball park plan of the next week, month, and don't think much further past that.

Thankfully Imm sends a reminder for 90 day online pulse check.

Sorry, she as well as my father lifelong Republicans, hate Trump and the MAGA movement. They are hugely disappointed in what their party has become.

Note:  Have a Good One….Folks…..!!!!!

It certainly is different living in Thailand than in New Jersey and visiting New York at the weekend sometimes when I lived there for a year in 1995, for one I do not have to look over my shoulder all the time in Thailand wondering if I am going to get mugged as I feet in New Jersey and New York.

In New York I once parked my car in a car park and walked for half an hour to the central shopping area, on the way back I was asked by so many guys who had appeared on the streets if I wanted to buy drugs.

I was passing two police officers and asked them for directions and they asked what am I doing in this area at this time of day, I was surprised as it was only 18:30

I worked in Amsterdam quite a few years ago and worked with about six American who were sent there for six months to work, they could not believed how we could just stroll around the city during the evenings and up to 1am in complete safety.

I do forget the day of the week sometimes here in Phuket but not the dates as I need to use the date many times during the day when writing software from my home office.

I am never asked what I ate today as my Thai partner does the cooking at home, and also she can cook international dishes as well as Thai.
