CT scan prices?

Featured Replies

Had a health check up at Rajburana govt hospital, 2000 baht which I thought was a great deal for Bangkok. Found a shadow in one lung on the x-ray so have to go back to see specialist, and for some reason a surgeon then likely a CT scan for a better look. 10k baht was mentioned by the nurse as the scan price. Looking at a private hospital not far away they have an offer of just 3900 baht for a CT scan on lung.

I was wondering are there add on maybe the private one is not mentioning and that this low price is just the starting point? 10k seemed a bit high for a govt hospital though.

I doubt if 10k will be the total cost cos there are nearly always add ons . I recently had an MRI scan at my local government hospital and paid the normal going rate of 8000 baht if the scan has been

That does seem steep when you can get an MRI for under 10k lately. Govt hospitals seem to be bumping up prices now

MRI and CT scan are very different and are used for different diagnostic tests.

The equipment is different. The cost of acquisition and operating the MRI is significantly more expensive than the CT equipment, 3-5X more expensive.

Please do update on the cost when you have it done somewhere. I also need a follow up lung CT scan for a new insurance policy. Thanks.

You might first consider getting another x-ray done at a different hospital to see if that is also diagnosed with a shadow. Especially if you do not have an existing health record at Rajburana with previous 'all clear' x-rays on file.

I'm scheduled for a lower abdominal MRI in a government hospital next month. 11,550. Plus 1,200 for contrast. Plus 25% for foreigner. Total 15,938. I am being done out of 50 satang. CT scans are quicker and cheaper apparently.

You should have checked MRI Thailand, usually cheaper

I listen to Sheryl. She does not recommend having an MRI with contrast outside of a hospital.

like i said a couple hospitals were doing big discounts, Siracha Phyathai were doing MRIs for 5k until end of June

November last year CT scan in Khon Kaen government hospital cost me just over 20,000 Baht. That was for Head/neck plus chest plus upper abdomen.

Just checked MRI Thailand out of interest. Lower abdomen is 14,000, contrast is another 2,500. Price doesn't include film. I assume that means the storage device for the imaging which you could provide yourself. Cheaper at the government hospital.

I'm sorry not to have info related to your query, but wanted to thank you for introducing Rajburana Hospital. How was your experience there? Did you have to wait long?
The prices for their check-up packages seem very reasonable and was wondering if the cost is the same for foreigners.

I doubt if 10k will be the total cost cos there are nearly always add ons . I recently had an MRI scan at my local government hospital and paid the normal going rate of 8000 baht if the scan has been arranged by a doctors appointment but walk in I was quoted 21000 baht . However in your case you need a CT scan for lungs as this is the gold standard and always preferred to an MRI which has its limitations for scanning lungs . The prices vary big time and attached is what I found on the web .

Low-Dose CT (LDCT) Lung Cancer Screening

Best for routine lung cancer screening, early detection, or monitoring. [1]

Went back to the government hospital to see consultant, they recommended a CT scan on the lung as expected -for 8k baht, at private Nakornthon Hospital not far away it's 3.900k I thought government was always cheaper? maybe foreign price, but all the other charges were Thai price, only 600 to see consultant.

I have a CT scan every year on my stomach, liver, prostate etc, costs me under 2000 baht, I get referenced by our doctor then just show up on a saturday morning, it is a private doctor not a hospital and includes printed pics

They seem to be raising the price of bigger ticket items, that's my recent experience

I have a diamond ring.

CTs are not all the same. There are low dose CTs, high resolution CTs, contrast-enhanced CTs etc. So need to be very careful in comparing prices, especially those in a promotional package. Often the latter are a type of CT suited for screening of asymptomatic people, low dose and without contrast.

@visalady since this is nto a routine screening but follow up investigation based on suspicious finding on Xray you should be guided by specialist recommendation. A routine screening package might not be suitable.

10K is not at all unusual cost for a government hospital CT with contrast.

Had a CT scan on my chest (lungs) at Government Hospital. I'm an expat retiree, so I paid the top price, cost me 14,500 baht.

That seems more than at a private hospital, they told us foreigners are charged same as Thais

Some government hospitals apply a surcharge (as much as 25%) for foreigners and some do not. They are free to do this if they want; basically it comes down to whether they see enough foreign patients to make it worth the effort to set up dual pricing.

Many (probably most) private hospitals also charge foreigners more; those that do not tend to already be unusually high priced.

As previously mentioned, there are different types of CTs. A high resolution CT of the chest with contrast in a private hospital will cost around 20K, give or take.

The special rates some hospitals list usually pertain to types of CT done for screening of asymptomatic people e.g. Low Dose CT screening for lung cancer in smokers. Probably not what the doctor has recommended you get.

In addition, private hospitals have an incentive to offer screening tests at below market rate since they often yield findings (including false positives) that lead to more costly tests/treatments.

It sounds like you still have not gotten the recommended CT. If you have doubts about what was recommended, get a copy of the Xray (actual film, not just report) and consult a pulomonologist elsewhere.

I had a full abdomen CT scan with contrasting agent at Chula yesterday. It was a bit over B13K.

It seemed to be a world class operation with very nice facilities, professional staff and state-of-the-art equipment. It seemed like money well spent to me. As a comparison, my son's birthday dinner at "Chocolate Factory" was about B3K for the four of us. The CT scan working to save me, while Chocolate Factory is working to kill me.

I think I pay more for weekend booking, but I am not sure how much.
