Police in Phnom Penh have arrested a British national after discovering more than 65 kilogrammes of marijuana during a raid on a condominium in the capital.

The operation, carried out yesterday on Street 78 in Tonle Bassac commune, was led by Deputy Governors Khleang Huot and Penh Phearum, working alongside Deputy Prosecutor Phy Sithong, municipal police, military police and Chamkar Mon District Governor Keang Lak.

Authorities inspected the building, home to nearly 200 legal residents, and identified three foreigners without passports — a Chinese, a South Korean and a Japanese national — who were taken in for further checks.

Inside one apartment, officers found 131 packages of marijuana weighing around 65 kilogrammes. The British suspect was immediately detained and handed over to the Phnom Penh Municipal Police for legal proceedings.

Cambodia has seen a series of arrests involving foreign nationals linked to drug trafficking in recent years. The country’s strict narcotics laws carry heavy penalties, with convictions often resulting in lengthy prison terms. Officials have repeatedly stressed that foreign offenders will face the same consequences as locals.

The latest case underscores the government’s ongoing crackdown on illicit substances, part of a wider effort to curb organised crime and protect Cambodia’s international reputation.

Legal procedures are now being finalised, with the suspect expected to face trial under Cambodian law. Authorities say the investigation will continue to determine whether the seized drugs were intended for local distribution or international smuggling networks.

This arrest adds to a growing list of foreign nationals caught in Cambodia’s anti-drug operations, highlighting the risks faced by those attempting to exploit the country as a transit point for narcotics.
