Thailand Named World’s Second-Best Retirement Destination

Featured Replies

Thailand has placed second in the 2026 Retirement Abroad Index, finishing one point behind the Philippines with a score of 77 out of 100. The study compared 20 countries across healthcare, retirement visa access, insurance requirements, living costs and expatriate integration. Thailand received particularly strong marks for its private healthcare system, earning 18 out of 20 and matching the highest score recorded in that category. Its established foreign community and comparatively affordable lifestyle also helped it finish ahead of destinations including Portugal, Spain and France. The Philippines claimed first place through easier visa access, lower costs and stronger English-language integration, while the report advised retirees to weigh their own priorities before relocating.

This list appears to have been put out by a health insurance company called Expatriate Group.

It seems many groups are making lists using the "best countries to retire" heading.

Thailand is ranked lower in other lists.

Although its where we are retiring to, the list is mostly nonsense because it completely ignores where you are retiring from, the passports you hold, how much money you have in the pot. If i were a Multimillionaire, would I retire to Thailand? No chance. Lake Garda or somewhere like that. For the income I will have though I would get to live like a millionaire in Thailand, and well, the wife is Thai so no choice 555. However with an EU Passport, there are many other places more preferable in all the ways they list without the hassle of needing visas. POrtugal jumps to 1st place with a 20 for Visa for example.

Well, yes and no.

The vast majority of the international retire abroad crowd are looking for relatively lower cost countries.

Indeed - but if you have a European passport, the Greece and the Islands very cheap as well and just as nice, and probably cleaner and better facilities. If you don't then the list is probably fairly correct.

Greece is often on best places to retire abroad lists and it is accessible to non EU people as well, obviously with different rules.
