A young couple in Indonesia has been publicly caned after an alleged kiss filmed during a livestream on TikTok triggered outrage and a criminal case under local morality laws.

The clip reportedly circulated online and was later flagged by residents who complained about what they described as “immoral” content.

Officials say the livestream spread quickly on social media before law enforcement intervened, with Sharia police tracking the couple down and arresting them shortly afterwards.

After several months in custody, the couple were brought before a Sharia court in Aceh and each sentenced to 21 lashes — reduced from an initial 25 lashes due to time already spent in prison.

The punishment was carried out publicly in the provincial capital, Banda Aceh, where officials confirmed the caning was conducted under Islamic criminal code provisions governing moral conduct.

Authorities also confiscated a mobile phone and USB drive containing the video, stating the material would be destroyed.

According to local officials, the case was triggered by community complaints after the livestream gained traction online. Sharia police described the incident as a clear violation of Aceh’s moral code, arguing that the public nature of the act — combined with its online dissemination — made enforcement necessary.

Public Reaction Divided

Reactions inside Aceh have been mixed. One local resident who attended the punishment said she believed it was justified, arguing it served as a warning to others about behaviour on social media.

Others, however, have expressed concern that the punishment is harsh for what critics describe as a private act amplified by digital exposure.

The couple’s case has reignited debate over the role of social media platforms like TikTok in regions where conservative laws are strictly enforced.

Legal Context in Aceh

Aceh Province is the only region in Indonesia permitted to implement its own Islamic criminal code, granted special autonomy following a peace deal in the mid-2000s.

The law covers a wide range of moral offences, including premarital intimacy, gambling, alcohol consumption, and in some cases same-sex relations. Penalties can reach up to 100 lashes, depending on the severity of the offence.

Importantly, the system can apply not only to Muslims but also to non-Muslims within the province, making it one of the strictest local legal frameworks in the country.

Rights Concerns and International Criticism

Human rights groups, including Amnesty International Indonesia, have repeatedly criticised public caning as cruel, degrading, and incompatible with international human rights standards.

Despite Indonesia having ratified conventions against corporal punishment, Aceh authorities maintain that the practice is a legitimate expression of local law and cultural autonomy.

The case adds to a long-running tension between regional religious enforcement and global criticism, particularly as viral social media content increasingly collides with strict local moral codes.
