No, the word is monitor to verify that no cheating is taking place. Not unusual in remote learning courses.

The person who officially monitors exam takers is called a proctor in the USA, an invigilator in the UK. Not to be confused with a proctologist, who examines you.

If you think just any old body will do, I doubt you really need one at all. Think about it, non approved non accredited proctors invigilating on behalf of who? Sounds dodgy.

It is a common and accepted practice among many accredited institutions of higher leaning to use Proctors from from the local communities. The expectation is that a student in a distance learning class, i.e. internet course, find a person that is associated with a respected institution of learning and demonstrates integrity by virtue of thier position and reputation. Most accredited universities in the USA require the Protor to be a proffessional teacher/instructor with a recognized univerity. If anyone in this forum meets these requirements they may be able to help a student that is trying to continue his/her education via distance learning ( a modern way of instruction common in most parts of the world.)

Yeah, it could totally be legitimate. I've needed something like this before --- I had to write an exam away from my university and it was ok if I found a legitimate proctor. Like another poster said, many universities will accept professors from other universities, professional engineers, doctors -- people who would have some something to lose if caught helping a student cheat. It's also not uncommon to pay a small honorarium for their time.
