I always wonder why somebody goes on vacation and brings expensive jewelry, to wear out in the streets? Thailand is a relatively safe destination, but why temp fate, and why create a situation where there's opportunity for somebody of far lesser means to engage in a crime of opportunity?

Why not? It would not have been particularly large. You can put it in the carry on or take it off. A 4000 Euro gold chain does not usually have 4000 Euro of gold in it. Have a look at the cost of basic gold chains. If 24K, It's usually less than 12 grams of gold.

I have worn a gold chain (not Thai gold) for many years, traveled all over the world never any problems other than having to remove it a few times at airport security.

I recently had to have ot devalued for insurance it came back as worth €7000! Its just a regular 24 at gold chain. So at 4k its more than possible.
