Anutin Orders Crackdown After Australia Cases

Featured Replies

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered an urgent meeting of Thailand’s narcotics suppression agencies and Airports of Thailand following two drug-smuggling cases involving travellers arriving in Australia from Thailand. The government fears the incidents could damage Thailand’s international reputation, its ambition to become a regional aviation hub, and its target of joining the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) by 2028.

The order was issued from France, where Anutin is on official duty. The meeting is scheduled for the afternoon of Friday, 3 July 2026, and will bring together agencies responsible for drug suppression, airport security and aviation oversight to strengthen coordination and review existing measures.

The move follows the arrest of a Thai Airways employee in Australia after authorities allegedly discovered more than 1 kilogramme of heroin concealed in tote bags. The 26-year-old flight attendant was arrested after arriving at Melbourne Airport on 25 June.

The Australian Federal Police charged the woman with importing and possessing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison. Thai Airways said it would fully cooperate with the relevant authorities during the investigation.

Attention has also focused on a separate case involving a 31-year-old French woman who arrived at Perth International Airport from Thailand. Australian police have charged her with allegedly importing border-controlled drugs.

The inclusion of Airports of Thailand in Friday’s meeting reflects growing concern that criminal networks may be attempting to exploit international air routes and trusted travel channels. Airports of Thailand operates major airports including Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang and Phuket.

Officials are expected to examine screening procedures, intelligence sharing and coordination between airport operators, customs officials, police and narcotics investigators. The review is intended to strengthen safeguards against international drug trafficking through Thailand’s airports.

The cases have also taken on wider political significance because the government is promoting Thailand as a regional aviation hub while seeking to improve governance, security and regulatory standards as part of its application to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development by 2028. According to the government’s policy statement, OECD membership is intended to strengthen national competitiveness, raise industrial and service standards, and build international confidence.

The Nation reported that authorities are now treating the latest cases as more than routine criminal investigations, viewing them as a test of Thailand’s ability to prevent drug-trafficking networks from exploiting the country’s airports and transport systems. The outcome of the 3 July meeting is expected to shape the next steps in tightening airport security and inter-agency cooperation.

These cases were to Australia, but not long ago a British boy was held in Turkey for drugs too. He also came from Thailand with a full suitcase. There is something wrong at the airport as it is so easy to get drugs through customs.

As I read elsewhere, checks for drugs on incoming, checks for explosives, weapons etc on outgoing! Might see a few more sniffer dogs for departing passengers soon.

Yes indeed.

The many tourist mules smuggling Cannabis out of Thailand and being detected and arrested at arrival airports.

Some examples Google -

Multiple recent cannabis hauls have been detected at airports arriving from Thailand, including several massive seizures:

  • India: Customs at Ahmedabad International Airport arrested a 40-year-old man on July 1, 2026, after finding 4.276 kilograms of hydroponic cannabis (valued at nearly ₹4 crore) hidden in food packets. He arrived on Thai Airways Flight TG-343 from Bangkok. [1]

  • Hong Kong: Customs at Hong Kong International Airport arrested two passengers on July 1, 2026, seizing 23 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds worth HK$4 million. A 38-year-old man arrived from Bangkok via Jakarta, and a 33-year-old woman arrived from Phuket.

  • Sri Lanka: Authorities arrested 22 Sri Lankan monks returning from a four-day holiday in Bangkok, uncovering 110 kilograms of potent Kush cannabis hidden in their luggage.

  • Global: British nationals have also been arrested internationally, including recent stops in Zimbabwe for carrying 66kg of cannabis originating from Thailand.

I haven't heard that term in a few decades. Hydroponic just means grown in a non soil medium. Could be flood benches or a peat/sand/vermiculite medium.

I can see that Anutin tries to blame it on the dirty farangs again .\

Well the Thai staff was about more than 1kg of heroin.

The French woman in contrast was for 50gr Butanediol, so probably for personal use.

I'm aware of another Thai, part of his cabinet, who imported heroin to Australia by the truckload.

As I have posted in another thread, why would Thailand want to catch them here and pay for their accommodation for the next 20 years, or more?

Better to let them fly, and inform authorities in the destination country, and let that country pay for their incarceration.

Money Number One in Thailand.

That was what I found curious.

There have been multiple previous cases of drugs being smuggled from Thailand. Some discovered at Thai airports and others at foreign airports.

But these two Australia cases have prompted a severe reaction that the others didn’t.

I do wonder why.

Another 48hr 'Crackdown' then; yeah that'll help. Meanwhile; the Girl being used as a Mule could get 25 yrs plus in the can and won't be sending anymore money home to Mum !

I would love to hear minister thammanats opinion on this matter.

Australia supplied two drug dogs and training for two custom's officers at the beginning of 2025 ,I don't know where they use them though.

Australian authorities also told the Indonesian authorities about "The Bali 9." The could have caught them coming back into Australia, but that would have been paying to accommodate 9 drug traffickers for a prison sentence from anywhere from say 12 to 20 years, each. In NSW, it currently costs around $66,000AUD a year to keep someone in gaol.

Informing the Indonesian authorities, so they would be arrested in Bali, saved the tax payer millions of dollasr, and saw 2 of them executed and the other 7 gaoled for years in Bali.
