Cambodia blocks 4,000 at borders

Cambodia has denied entry to nearly 4,000 people and stopped 400 departures in the first half of 2026, as authorities tighten border controls and step up efforts against human trafficking.

The General Department of Immigration (GDI) confirmed the figures on Monday, saying the measures were part of a wider crackdown on illegal activity. Director General Sok Veasna explained that while 2.3 million people entered Cambodia in the first six months of the year, arrivals were down 40 per cent compared with 2025, a decline he linked to global economic pressures and ongoing conflicts.

Among those blocked from leaving were Cambodian women suspected of being lured abroad under false pretences. “We suspect these cases might be linked to human trafficking,” Veasna said, noting that many were deceived into travelling to China for work or marriage. He added that China had assisted in returning some of the women. Nearly 200 cases of suspected trafficking involving Cambodian women were recorded in the first half of the year.

Officials said the 4,000 people denied entry came from 76 different nationalities. Reasons included failing to meet entry requirements and appearing on international watchlists. The GDI also reported deporting more than 10,000 foreigners in connection with online scams during the same period, underscoring the scale of its enforcement drive.

Spokesperson Sok Somnea stressed that the measures were designed not only to protect Cambodia’s borders but also to safeguard vulnerable citizens. “We have done a lot of work to help our Cambodian women,” he said, highlighting the importance of prevention and travel bans.

The crackdown reflects Cambodia’s growing concern over cybercrime and trafficking networks that exploit porous borders and vulnerable travellers. With arrivals falling sharply, officials are keen to show that tighter controls are aimed at protecting both the country’s security and its people.
