Airport cannabis smuggler jailed after £430,000 drug bust

A man who attempted to bring almost half a million pounds worth of cannabis into the UK through Glasgow Airport has been jailed as authorities intensify a crackdown on drug couriers arriving from Thailand.

Zane Jamahl Hutton-Lewis, 34, from London, was sentenced to 12 months in prison at Paisley Sheriff Court after admitting his role in the failed smuggling operation.

Border Force Foils Major Drug Haul

Hutton-Lewis was stopped by Border Force officers at Glasgow Airport on 21 January after arriving from Thailand carrying 43.8kg of cannabis concealed inside his luggage.

The drugs were estimated to have a street value of around £430,000. Following his arrest, the investigation was led by the Scottish Organised Crime Partnership, bringing together officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Police Scotland.

Surge in Thailand Smuggling

The conviction comes as the NCA warns that cannabis smuggling from Thailand has risen sharply in recent years. Officials say the number of passengers caught arriving in the UK with the drug increased from 142 in 2023 to 801 in 2024 before climbing again to 976 last year.

The trend shows little sign of slowing. More than 600 suspected drug couriers have already been arrested at UK airports during the first half of this year, putting 2026 on course to surpass previous records.

New Penalties Raise the Stakes

Thai authorities have also introduced tougher financial penalties aimed at disrupting the trade. Under new rules introduced in June, anyone caught smuggling cannabis faces fines of 30,000 baht—around £680—for every kilogram carried.

The NCA says a typical courier caught with 26kg could face fines approaching £18,000. Those unable to pay risk prosecution in Thailand and prison sentences of up to two years, alongside any punishment imposed by UK courts.

Crime Gangs 'Will Leave You High and Dry'

Beki Wright, head of the NCA's Borders Threat Team, urged anyone considering acting as a drug courier to think twice. She warned that organised crime groups often recruit through social media before abandoning couriers once they are arrested.

She said those convicted face life-changing consequences, including prison, a criminal record and lasting damage to employment and travel prospects. Her message was blunt: the risks far outweigh any promised reward.
