I find it slightly embarrassing that so many Westerners jump on this band wagon. I brought it up today with a group of Thai people and highlighted the phrase is similar to taking your money elsewhere if you don't like the service/respect given in a restaurant. That made them think as they've all experienced bad experiences while eating out, yet still paid for their meals, but never return again.

I think this incident was a nothing incident really, but there were quite a few triggers in there from both sides.

I couldn't be bothered to read all the pages of bickering. As usual some people get their knickers in a twist and detract from the subject at hand. This was a big issue to Thai people, and if things hit hard there is usually reason for that.

The thread is about Westerners though. When I read other Westerners denouncing the actions, it just feels like virtue signalling. The kids didn't handle it the best, but does that really deserve the international outrage it received? I can't help feel that with social media, netizens are not going to be happy until the others kill themselves. Even then, we see the left celebrating such incidents now. Lowest of the low. Unless you are perfect yourself, how can you expect others to never get things wrong, especially in the heat of the moment?

I don't think we as foreigners have any business being offended for the Thai people or any other group.

I do think the behavior of the kids was rude and boorish. If I had been there I would have asked them to keep it down because they are being rude. Their behavior was nowhere near that of Jonny Somali, who is now in jail.

Personally, the policies of the Thai Government have made me decide to retire elsewhere. Thailand is losing one to two million baht per year because their policies continue to increase the hassle factor in retiring there. Yes, it is their country and they can do what they want, but it's my money and I will choose where to spend it. It's unfortunate since I really like the Thai people and enjoyed my time there.

There are many types of Thai mentality. Not all Thais are selling their bodies. Thais are conscious of their status in life and which region they come from. Stereotyping all Thais via some t shirt slogan is demeaning to all Thais as a nationality.

You'll get them from people who argued with you in previous topics, all because they disagreed with you or you proved them wrong. Following you around placing them on anything you say. Yes, petty and childish.

Why are many westerners so self-conscious on what others think of them ? What do you care on what you look like or appear to others ? Only those with very low self esteem of themselves are so scared to appear as "cheap charlies" or god know what. Those who are confident and comfortable with themselves, do not really give a sh... on what others may think or gossip about.

This guy is apparently Thai expressing his offense so not really anything unexpected with that.

On the line of argument that I brought up positing that offense by Thais is reasonable and understandable but the FACT the reactions to the offense have by now been taken to quite ridiculously EXTREME levels, I will add something I heard on the TNT channel today.

Apparently, the names and addresses of UNDERAGE Italians allegedly who were on the train have been publicized online inviting who knows what kinds of extrajudicial retribution against those individuals. Based on a video. Not even based on any court case. DARK vigilante stuff. Of course such doxing would be outrageous even targeted at adults as well, but against minors, it goes without saying how incredibly wrong and indeed dangerous that is.

To add some of the social media rhetoric from some Thais I'm hearing has the tone that the nation of Thailand itself has been attacked by a foreign power, and the Thai lady who filmed is some kind of patriotic here, almost to the level of a war analogy.

You see this is what I've been saying.

Normal offense by Thais expected and deserved.

But the extreme level the reaction to this has actually taken gives an indication about something going on not at all flattering about modern Thai particularly online culture.

Sure of course criticize these specific Italians, but where is the SELF criticism by Thais of Thai culture in response to these EXTREME reactions. Crickets, I suspect, but if you've got evidence of that, please post it.

Bad behaviour is nothing new, not in Thailand and not in any other country. At some point, there will be examples of the consequences people face if this continues the way it has for a long time. Again, Spain is a perfect example for those who were there in the 70s and 80s compared with today.

Anyway, I still think this was more of a leadership problem than a kids problem. I cannot wait to see the media interviews and hear her explanation once she is back home.
