It only became the "huge" issue due to social media spin and saturation. It got pumped up and spread in magnitude due to media sensationalism.

Were the kids out of bounds first with their noise level and then with the response to the thai lady. Yeah but most teenagers get like that when in groups and excited and then feed off each other. Should they have responded that way, no.

Should the thai lady have made a couple of comments that were slightly off, if you heard them, and having a video session rather than trying to just refer to their loudness as for being impolite on the BTS enclosed environment and then letting it go yeah.

Should the media sensationalize the situation for clicks and attention and repeatedly publishing it to stir up "followers" NO but thats what they have become in order to stay relevant.

In the age of cell phones and none stop contact the noise levels over most groups, thais included, can be out of place and annoying and its not going to change anytime soon.

I will now attempt to craft a summary that is perhaps to some surprisingly diplomatic.

-- Foreigners do bring a lot of money into Thailand

-- In general, both the Thai people and the Thai government welcome that money, the more the better

-- For a foreigner to mention those two above facts is potentially a sensitive area of discussion and if mentioned at all, caution is advisable.

-- For a foreigner to in any way suggest that bringing in money excuses any kind of what is considered by Thais to be bad or culturally insensitive behavior is PLAYING WITH FIRE. AYOR! DANGER WILL ROBINSON!

That all said, even though offense by Thais about this is reasonable and understandable very extreme reactions by Thais as we've seen related to the Italian train incident perhaps tells us something about modern Thai culture in the age of social media that is not so flattering.

Did you not say that The t-shirts that state "No Money No Honey" in Thailand's red light districts is hypocrisy in regards to Thais. It was my bad when I mentioned the OP by mistake. You've actually used the silly T-Shirt that Thais don't wear and 99% would find offensive multiple times to show they are hypocrites. Just admit it was a dumb statement and move on. It is not a Thai thing but a human thing. If during the financial crisis a bunch of Americans on a train in Greece said the same thing and mobile phones were as popular as today, the same thing might have happened. Do you really think this video couldn't happen in Mexico, India.......?

You're letting your fears control you. Thais could care less about what you or any of us for that matter with the rare exception. We really aren't that important. Just have fun in your golden years ;)

This incident, as I see it from the available social media posts and videos, involved a group of happy Italian kids with poor leadership and no control over the group. They behaved badly and should have known better, but this could have happened anywhere in the world.

This has nothing to do with my fears.What a bizarre accusation.

As far as the extreme Thai reactions to this, I think the extreme nature of it does reflect specifically on modern Thai culture and sorry to say not in a flattering way, and it would not be the same in most other countries.

A normal reaction would be these particular offensive foreigners are A-holes, and then move on without making it an international incident.

That is my opinion. I don't need you, espcially you, to agree.

But the Thais gross overreaction to the "money" issue is just dumb denial. while western tourists aren't much smarter as they persists visiting a country that becomes every day more hostile.

You're getting into a separate though important topic.

Yes it is quite obvious that there is a current atmosphere of increased xenophobia towards foreigners in Thailand, apparently coming from the top down.

I won't start that topic but I welcome others to do so as it's more important than rowdy Italians on the BTS.
