PM Anwar Says Malaysia's Only Cost for Bahrain F1 Grand Prix Is RM16M

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that Malaysia will host the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2026 at Sepang International Circuit with minimal financial burden compared to previous hosting arrangements.

Malaysia will return to hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix after more than a decade, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announcing a remarkably cost-effective arrangement for the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix scheduled for October 2026 at Sepang International Circuit. The only expenditure Malaysia will bear is RM16 million annually for track maintenance and upgrades to meet international motorsport standards—a fraction of previous hosting costs.

Anwar highlighted the dramatic difference in financial burden compared to Malaysia's 2017 hosting arrangement, which involved expenditures running into hundreds of millions of ringgit. This time, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) has waived registration fees entirely, representing a significant saving for the Malaysian government. The Formula 1 Grand Prix will be sandwiched between the Azerbaijan and Singapore races, positioning Malaysia as a crucial stop on the international motorsport calendar.

Why Malaysia Was Selected

According to Anwar, the FIA evaluated dozens of countries before selecting Malaysia as the host nation. The selection criteria focused on three critical factors: peace and stability, efficient administration, and superior infrastructure. Malaysia's track record in each area convinced the international governing body that Sepang could deliver a world-class Formula 1 experience. The announcement underscores Malaysia's competitive advantage in hosting major international sporting events.

Economic and Strategic Significance

Anwar emphasized the exceptional value proposition of hosting the event, noting that the RM16 million annual investment will draw the world's top Formula 1 drivers, state-of-the-art racing technology, and thousands of international engineers to Malaysia. This level of global attention typically requires significantly higher expenditures in other countries—often exceeding RM1 billion. The event positions Sepang as a premier motorsport venue and enhances Malaysia's international profile as a major events destination.

Accessibility and Malaysia Madani Initiatives

The government is studying plans to introduce 'Madani tickets' for the Formula 1 Grand Prix to ensure greater accessibility for local residents and families. This initiative aligns with the Malaysia Madani concept, which emphasizes the well-being of the people and greater inclusivity in international-scale events. The government's commitment to making the historic Formula 1 event accessible to ordinary Malaysians demonstrates a departure from exclusive, elite-only event models toward shared national experiences.
