Widow's agony after funeral ashes fraud exposed

A grieving widow has told a court she spent months speaking to what she believed were her husband's ashes, only to discover they belonged to someone else after a funeral director's shocking fraud unravelled.

The emotional testimony came as families confronted former funeral director Robert Bush, who has admitted dozens of offences linked to one of Britain's most disturbing funeral scandals.

Families Betrayed by Trusted Funeral Director

Hull Crown Court heard Valerie Coates believed she had been keeping and talking to the ashes of her late husband, Ron, every day after his funeral.

That belief was shattered when investigators uncovered widespread wrongdoing at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull. Mrs Coates said Bush had robbed her of the chance to fulfil a promise she and her husband had made to have their ashes laid to rest together.

She described their celebration of Ron's life as having been transformed into a "sick joke" and a "horror story", adding she would never know what had happened to his real remains.

Disturbing Discoveries Revealed

Bush, 48, has admitted 67 offences, including preventing lawful and decent burials, fraudulent trading, fraud by false representation and theft from charities.

The court heard investigators found 35 bodies and more than 100 sets of ashes at his premises in March 2024. Prosecutors said 31 bodies, including that of an unborn baby, had been kept at the funeral home while families were falsely told their loved ones had been cremated and were handed the ashes of strangers.

Heartbreaking Accounts Continue

Other relatives described the lasting trauma caused by Bush's actions. Brooke Atkinson recalled inappropriate remarks he allegedly made about her father's body, while Angela Scottow accused him of treating her late father "like a piece of meat".

Tina Thames told the court she suffered nightmares after learning her 88-year-old father's body had remained at the funeral home for weeks, still wearing his hearing aids when police recovered him.

Stacey Foster and Peter Cooke also revealed they had commissioned memorial jewellery containing what they believed were the ashes of their stillborn son, Tommy, only to discover the remains belonged to someone else.

The sentencing hearing continues, with more victim impact statements expected as families seek justice for a betrayal they say has permanently damaged their memories of those they loved.
