Cataract surgery

RUTNIN Eye Hospital in Bangkok has already been mentioned but thought I'd add my 2 cents. RUTNIN has a very good reputation for eye care. It is their specialty. You only have 2 eyes so seeking the best care possible treatment that is not beyond your means makes the most sense. I am 86 and my eyes were done one year apart by Dr Steven Dell in Austin, TX. I still have the vision of a teenager. BTW, Steven is brother of Michael Dell of Dell Computers. Remember you are looking for a quality outcome, not the cheapest available.

Should have mentioned my eyes were done 25 years ago.

I wonder what kind of excuse they would use if you didn't have diabetes.

Do government hospitals offer lenses with astigmatism correction?

Some do, yes. Not community level hospitals but university hospitals and specialty eye hospitals would.

Chiang Rai. I'm told by the nurse who checked my eyes at my recent diabetes clinic check, that If I travel to Pai (?) just south of Chiang Rai I can get it done (basic lens I assume) for just under 10K. Since I have always worn spectacles ( contact lenses when I was young and dashing) that doesn't bother me.

I don't see how 10k can be possible as the lens alone costs that much. 15-20 k (inclusive of pre snd post op checks snd post op meds), yes.

I don't know why she would specifically suggest Pai, which is only a community level hospital, but she might know something I do not.

Personally in Chiang Rai I would start with the main government hospital in Chiang Rsi town, which is a regional level hospital.

I am a bit concerned by your statement that vision has worsened suddenly as that is not usual with cataracts. Together with the fact that you are diabetic, a thorough eye exam by a skilled opthalmologist is essential to determine if something else is going on in addition to the long standing cataract.

In addition, your diabetes puts you at above average risk for infection. I would caution against a low level hospital for this.
