Thai arrested after fatal Poipet shooting

A Thai national has been arrested in Poipet following the fatal shooting of a compatriot, Cambodian police confirmed.

Authorities said 26‑year‑old Porawat Thong Hmon was detained on 29 July at Samaki Meanchey Village after a joint operation involving national, provincial and municipal forces. Officers seized two handguns and two shotguns during the arrest.

Investigators reported that the victim, 33‑year‑old Jusuwan Thongchai, was shot from a white Honda PCX motorcycle the previous evening. The suspect is being held at the Poipet Police Inspectorate while inquiries continue.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns over cross‑border crime in Cambodia’s frontier towns, where Thai nationals are frequently involved in disputes linked to gambling and illicit trade.

Separately, police in Sihanoukville reported a murder‑suicide on 30 July. A man fatally stabbed his former partner near the Upper Market before turning the knife on himself. Sources said the couple had recently separated and an argument erupted when the attacker tried to rekindle the relationship. He later died in hospital from his injuries.

Both cases have drawn attention to rising violent crime in Cambodia’s coastal and border regions, where police say personal disputes and easy access to weapons often escalate into deadly confrontations.
