Two F1 weekends set to boost Malaysia tourism

Malaysia is preparing for a major tourism lift in October as two Formula 1 race weekends take place in the region within days of each other. Tourism Malaysia expects the close timing to increase demand for hotels, transport, restaurants and other visitor services.

The Bahrain Grand Prix is scheduled at Sepang International Circuit from October 2 to 4, followed by the Singapore Grand Prix from October 9 to 11. Tourism Malaysia Director-General Datuk Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim described the timing as a rare opportunity for the two events to generate a wider regional travel boost.

Malaysia plans an official F1 carnival

Speaking at the launch of Star Karnival Cuti-Cuti Malaysia 2026 at Paradigm Mall in Johor Baru on Saturday, August 1, Amirul Rizal said the government had instructed Tourism Malaysia to organise an official F1 Carnival alongside the Sepang race.

He said neighbouring Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand had already shown strong interest in bringing tour groups to Malaysia. Tourism Malaysia is also due to meet representatives from Bahrain Tourism, the Bahrain government, Gulf Air and race organisers to finalise joint promotional plans.

Amirul Rizal said Tourism Malaysia expected significant economic spillover through additional hotel bookings, transport use and food and beverage spending. The consecutive weekends are also intended to strengthen cross-border tourism cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore.

Johor expects benefits from Singapore visitors

Singapore's night race has historically brought visitors across the Causeway into Johor for accommodation, meals and short breaks. Tourism officials hope the two-race window will support that existing travel pattern while promoting Visit Johor Year 2026.

Amirul Rizal called Singapore a friendly neighbour and said the arrangement offered both countries a chance to support each other's tourism objectives. The practical effect is likely to extend beyond race ticket holders, as accompanying family members and regional travellers add to demand during the two weekends.

What it means for foreign visitors and residents

Foreign residents and tourists planning trips through Kuala Lumpur, Sepang, Johor or Singapore in early October should expect a busier travel period. Accommodation near the circuits and major transport links may be in greater demand, while roads and cross-border routes could also carry more event traffic.

Those intending to attend either race, or simply travel during the same period, may benefit from arranging hotels and transport earlier than usual. The tourism push could also create more organised packages and linked activities once the planned carnival and promotion agreements are finalised.
