A Russian attempt to stage a symbolic battlefield victory has backfired after two soldiers sent to film themselves raising a flag near a frontline town were captured by Ukrainian forces, according to the Ukrainian military.

The incident highlights the growing importance of information warfare, where propaganda victories are increasingly pursued alongside military gains.

Mission Unravels at the Front

Ukraine's 36th Separate Marine Brigade said the two Russian soldiers were sent towards Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka in the Donetsk region with instructions to stand beside the town sign and wave a Russian flag.

According to the brigade, the footage was intended to support claims that Russian forces had seized the settlement. Instead, Ukrainian reconnaissance troops intercepted the pair before the video could be released and took them prisoner.

Ukraine Claims Blow to Kremlin Narrative

Announcing the capture on Facebook, the brigade said it had disrupted what it described as another Russian "information-psychological operation".

The marines said the attempted infiltration took place on the Kostiantynivka front before troops returned to their defensive positions. The unit pledged to continue blocking both Russian advances and what it called fabricated battlefield narratives.

Propaganda Under Pressure

Short videos showing Russian flags raised over contested settlements have become a recurring feature of Moscow's wartime messaging. Such images are often presented as evidence of territorial gains and battlefield momentum.

Ukraine has repeatedly argued that some of these recordings are filmed before areas are fully secured, creating a gap between online claims and conditions on the ground.

High-Risk Tactics Carry Heavy Costs

The latest incident follows a similar episode reported in the Zaporizhzhia region in June, when a Russian assault group allegedly filmed itself raising a flag before coming under Ukrainian attack.

According to Ukrainian accounts, several soldiers were killed and another was captured after the filming ended. Those claims have not been independently verified.

As the war increasingly plays out across both the battlefield and social media, symbolic victories have become a strategic objective. But Ukraine says attempts to manufacture those moments can carry deadly consequences when propaganda collides with frontline reality.
