US DL expired long ago and cannot renew online.

No you are not if your bank doesn't ask for them.

I only have my passport.

I have an account.with that bank and I use it daily but not for my visa.

I also have accounts at two other Thai banks.

Hopefully this insanity doesn't spread.

Banks tend to ask for such things when you show up for any service.

Sooner or later you always need to do that.

I've said this for a LONG TIME: Know Your Customer in Thailand means treat every foreigner like a criminal.

This guy has been banking with them for 10 years, but he is being treated like he is beginning his banking relationship with them today.

As foreigners here our legal status never increases here short of permanent residence.

Day 1 or Year 40

Just remembered I need three forms of ID to renew my passport so not much different. Once they accepted an expired library card!

I have two passports. Now both organizations accept the other's as proof of ID. Sorted.

Too many scammers in the world is the problem.

Interesting that Bangkok Bank for example, which used to have a pretty detailed list of requirements for foreigners on their web site, now says this -

Having been posting here for almost 20 years it beggars belief that people are still using Bangkok Bank.

Hardly any post regarding problems with other banks.

So I have one of the four........passport.....the UK has no national ID, I live in my wife's house, so no tabien baan, and don't drive.......

I think there is a planned push to close expat accounts by some of the banks...primarily Bangkok Bank who also imposed a four month seasoning rule

Get thee down to the Amphur office end get yourself a yellow book that makes 4 if you need four which you probably don't.

No driving licence......but I will get it sorted.....I want to get away from the Bangkok bank and move to Kasikorn.

K-bank in Udon Thani wanted my US DL, which expired years ago. No exceptions even though I had NonO visa for 15+ years, a yellow book and pink ID card.

Hope your branch is more helpful.

I also have a Kbank account and I had some big friction with them when they insisted that I fill out some US tax forms and they refused to accept that I had no US address to give them. It actually became a scene in the bank and lasted 15 minutes with managers being called in. It just didn't compute. Computer says no. Eventually they gave in but they weren't happy.

(To be clear I wasn't refusing to file the forms. That wasn't ever an option. Only insisting my residence was Thailand not the US.)

So my question you is if you're talking about opening a new Kbank account or did they pull that home country drivers license crap on you with an existing account.

I don't know but in the US don't be impressed if you meet a bank VICE president.

They tend to have many.

I was asked for a home country driving license/ID at SCB when I went to get a new ATM card after mine was lost. They wanted a US address for their records. I insisted I had no US address and they relented after a couple of minutes, but they were fairly insistent. That was several years ago.

Late last year I went to all three of the banks where I have accounts to provide details of my new passport. I was armed to the teeth expecting requests for a home country address, so I had my blue tabien baan, TM17 residence certificate book, police registration book, and an original letter from the SSA addressed to me at my Thai address along with my passport and passport card hoping that this barrage of documentation would suffice in the absence of a home country ID. Not one of them asked for a home country address.

Somewhere I have a New York DL that expired in the 1980s. I suppose I should dig it out and keep it handy just in case.

I don't think an expired license will ever be usefull.

My wife, a CSI government employee for decades, inquired for me at K-Bank.

Like you, my address is in Thailand and has been full time since 2009.

You're lucky you found branches that would accommodate you.

Bank branches, Immigration offices and local tax offices have much in common. It's different everywhere.

I'll say the same as I've said on many similar topics. You're not doing yourself a favor sending a Thai to inquire at a branch that isn't familiar (and may very well be unwilling) with dealing with foreign customers. Go to a branch with English-speaking staff yourself, on your own; you neither need to be chaperoned by your wife nor could she be helpful in any way, more likely the opposite.

I have been using them since 2002 and have never had an issue with them for anything.
