First Marriage Extension - Buriram

Extension using money in bank method does not need to funds from abroad.

Income method obviously require international transfers.

For Non O obtained in Thailand the funds need to be shown international transfer.

For Non O eVisa that is not a requirement

Thanks......just to clarify......I will be applying for an extension based on marriage, having arrived on a Non-O issued in the UK (years ago)

So as long as my account shows the right amount of money, seasoned for the right amount of time......I can transfer the money from anywhere, even from another bank account within Thailand?

In that case you have nothing to ask. There is nothing magical about Buriram. If Buriram imm accept the application then it won't be rejected further up the food chain

That's why I asked. So good you are aware of the 4 month gig nonsense.

I'm with Kasikorn. Only downside is those dealing with CW unfortunately Kasikorn closed branch there.

It's frightening to think some have fallen foul of that and maybe even had to start the whole visa process again.

Nah. For those that had the correct seasoning for immigration (2months) then no problem with immigration issuing the extension.

What BBL did was to freeze the account for 4 months as a requirement to bank to issue Bank Letter.

AKA: blackmail

With around 20 marriage extension renewals, having NO KIDS from this union, I have never had any problems having them fully accepted, and annually stamped in.

I think that the least th Op could do would be to thank @Liquorice for his well presented list of docs and other sound advice offered.

Mentioning and highlighting having kids with your Thai wife at "extension time" reminds me that I've been dutifully spreading special elephant deterant powder around my garden these past 20 years, and have never seen one yet!! So, it's definitely working 😅

I am happy to offer my gratreful thanks to everyone who contributed...especially @Liquorice for the comprehensive list for documents required for an extension based on Thai spouse. I had that already but printing it off as an aide memoire is a useful tool for anybody.

I have also been here over 20 years but have previously had retirement extension., I am taking advantage of my new found marital status to reduce the amount of money I keep in Thailand. As I get older I find I need less money for day to day needs. I have to use money in the bank for this first marriage extension but after that I will simply keep transferring 40k Baht each month. plus other capex as required.

Thanks again to all who contributed.

Make sure you start the monthly transfers at time of first extension.

Next extension would need to show 12 transfers.

In fact I would start the transfers prior to applying for this upcoming extension.

Thank you Dr J.

No worries, I have been doing 40k WISE transfers into Kasikorn each month all year - once I knew that I was going to let my retirement extension expiry, I have been gearing up for this - 400k+ has been there all year as well.

Some would suggest my method was overkill but when I changed from 800k (retirement) to income method I ran the two in tandom.

Even keeping the 800k all year till my application using monthly transfers.

Note for others. I use Kasikorn and WISE for transfers.

When I obtained the 12 month bank statement I requested it in thai language.

The transfers were shown as international in Thai script.

I have problems every year......new requirements.....changed requirements.......new demands.....it has been nightmare every time.

You could argue it is my fault for simply doing exactly the same as I did the year before........555

Every time I read posts like this, I think the Thai wife extension looks like a complete nightmare:

uncertainty about the documents to be presented, need to make multiple trips to Immigration, etc

The sole intent appears to be discouraging it and/or pushing for agency help.

I understand there’s been a lot of abuse, but still…

The worst thing is that I’m probably going to apply for it in one year from now!

Our IO is fairly quiet and efficient.......but last time they went over and over and over every document whilst we sat there in silence watching......I swear three officers went through the huge stack of documents, twice each. The people sat behind us must have been giving us daggers.

Then they ask the same three questions every year......and I know they see a lot of people, but they recognise us I'm sure. What's you father's name, what's your mother's maiden name, how many siblings?

So you are right it is a complete nightmare.

It is the multiple trips that irk people.

To avoid this my wife and I got to Imm. about a week before and ask if there is any change to the documentation required and ask for a list which someone usually writes freehand.

We always take more photos than they need an tell them they can chose which ones they want. A mate went there recently and they showed him our pictures as an example.

The hand drawn map they retrieve from our file and copy.

All the rest is straight forward.

Have you read that back to yourself.

Fact that many immigration offices do not supply a "check list"

Of course it would be a dream to imagine that would be available online.

So you went to immigration with wife just to establish what's required.

Do you realize how ridiculous that is.

By that I mean ridiculous that you need to visit immigration to current left field requirements

Basic issue is Thailand has poor IT setup and ridiculous requirements across the board. eg TM30, TM47 etc etc

Thailand has a long way to go (and will not achieve it in my lifetime - if indeed they want to) to get to the consistence of requirements like Schengen. There are pluses and minuses but the laid down structure of Schengen is easy to follow - and they 'reward' you after having a number of standard visas; my wife now receives 5 year visas, Thailand should be doing that for those of us with a track record.

The Schengen visa may be valid for 5 years, but it only permits a stay for a maximum of 90 days within any rolling 180 day period.

Hardly comparable with what Thailand offers.

I was talking about the process.

In my days doing the marriage extensions at Buriram Io, the only quirks where

KR 2 max 1 day old and Bank Letter issued the same day as going to immigrration.

Everything else was the standard things.

Firstly I am/was trying to help the OP not defend Imm. or justify myself to you.

12 hours ago, DrJack54 said:

Our immigration office does not supply a list. But when spoken to will, as stated originally, on an individual Imm. officer basis give the requirements.

Partly. We go to Imm. office to say hello and to show our faces. They are for the most part friendly and, although it is not far to go, it does mean we get all our ducks in a row before application day.

12 hours ago, DrJack54 said:

We don't NEED to visit. We simply go to show our faces and get confirmation. On application day we don't go with trepidation or anticipation we simply return with all required paper work. This last bit is the important bit I wish to impart to the OP.

So are you complaining about the way we do it? Complaining about the way Imm. do it? Or simply complaining because that is in your nature.

As for definitive information or the lack of IT related stuff. You have to remember who is in charge of the transaction. Them not you. Sounds as if you wish to be in control of the process. Which is probably the reason they do it the way they do?

Won't deal with all your points but my point is immigration offices should not have office specific requirements.

The requirements should be universal and in addition have a clear printed check list.

It would be simple to produce list of requirements.

As for visiting immigration to show your faces and have a chit chat... that may work in the sticks however certainly not possible at a place like CW aka the Zoo.

In almost every thread folk first reply to give advice is.. "which immigration office do you deal with"

That in itself is a joke. It shouldn't matter which office you deal with.

Chalk and Cheese.

If you want to mention Schengen visas, then compare it to applying for a visa to enter Thailand, which is now all accomplished online.
No visits to the Embassies, unlike a Schengen visa.

Internal Thai Immigration offices you're not applying for a visa to enter Thailand, your applying to extend your permission of stay for 1 year, a permit, not a visa.
Could you extend your stay in a Schengen Country for 1 year?

Oh yes, I'm not saying that there have been numerous new (previously unseen) rules and requirements, but nothing I've had to race home for, or come back on another day for, or that I'd call a "nightmare " .

I was mainly trying to make the point that it's not necessary to trot out the " I've got kids from this marriage " to get an annual extension based on marriage.

Good luck with your future encounters! ☺️

You missed the point again.

It is exactly chalk and cheese I talking about... Well, I am talking about chalk and you are replying about cheese.

I agree 100% regarding your cheese response about how good the availability of extensions is in Thailand.... But I was talking about the process of applying for a Schengen visa versus applying for a a Thailand extension.

The Schengen process is very prescriptive and you tick the boxes you get the visa.... Incrementally, a longer validity period after a few successful applications. My opinion was that extension process in Thailand should be that simple without the idiosyncrasies that are apparent in different office - one set of requirements universally applied throughout Thailand - with a checklist to follow, like Schengen.

I think that the Thailand Immigration policy has much to be applauded but (not unlike driving laws) there is an inconsistency in application.

Extensions are long term temporary permits of stay, not a visa application.
Each Countries Immigration rules are different, you can't really compare one against another.

If you want to make a comparison of visa applications, then at least compare similar, like the Schengen visa and an e-visa application for Thailand.

Usually the bad experiences/complaints involve people with long drives to Imm. Office.

Simply visit the nearest Imm. Office and ask for guidance as to what they want. As you know?

  • Bank statement 2 months or 3.

  • Size and number of photos.

  • Map (hand drawn) of where you live. Locate you house on Google Maps put a piece of paper on the screen and trace to nearest landmark or business/restaurant etc.

  • Copy of wedding cert. from Amphur office.

  • and whatever else they want.

Yes it involves and extra visit but at least it will all be clear.

Agreed. For my first go-round, this is what we ended up doing here in Korat. The "intent" was to file away all of my paperwork, but as the office and the national website had some differences and I was really early (learning more every day), we were given a checklist and told to come back closer to that current visa's expiration. Visiting the office and getting a checklist was hugely beneficial. Cheers.
