Chronic Gerd.

Featured Replies

Hi there, I suffer from chronic GERD I've tried everything from doctors to OTC medication. I suffer from all of the symptoms, chronic sore throat, a raspy voice, blocked nasal passages and a very bad bitter taste in my mouth. I tried omeprazole for a few months but nothing changed. Has anybody had this condition before and treated it successfully?

Have you had an endoscopy yet ?

Could be hiatal hernia, and usually a simple fix. I have small one, and doc said simple fix if wanting. I just adjusted diet and sleeping position, which was enough.

If your problem, obviously a bit larger, but seems easy enough to fix, if the issue.

Thirty-odd year sufferer of GERD/GORD.
Omeprozole works for me.
My issues started with taking diclofenec in the mid- to late-eighties when "take with food" meant "with a glass of milk".
Great! Gastric ulcers at 22.
Gastroscopy at 32.
Scar tissue.
Omeprazole since ~2002
BUT, please bear with me...

Mixing milk and eggs;
Lamb and pork fat;

Milky alcoholic drinks (Bailey's, White Russians, proper Egg Nog, atholl brose)

Drinking coffee before eating something solid
and (most importantly)
eating less than two hours before bed.

You may want to stay on the omeprazole even if "they"say its detrimental for long-term use.
I'm not a medical doctor, but it's available OTC here for about 20-30 baht for a ten-pack. Maybe stay the course and take it in the morning, an hour before you eat or drink anything non-clear.

I'm thinking you might already have researched this, as you're a person who's conscious of their health. I took it for H Pylori for quite awhile until it started to have side effects, so I stopped and just continued with the probiotics, yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, turmeric and the healthy foods like I always have before. It does work as indicated, but I worried about the long term effects This is a link for you to consider..................https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10248387/.

I've had Gerd on and off for the last 8 years. During my first bout I didn't know what it was and went to the Emergency Room. They prescribed me Omeprazole and suggested I see a specialist.

The Omeprazole worked very well but the specialist said I had Eosinophilic Esophagitis as well. Now, this was believable as I have had food stuck in my esophagus 2 times, each ten years apart..and I do have to be careful by eating slow. This was an older doctor and he just didn't seem to care about me at all. He wanted me to come in every month where they'd knock me out and stick a tube down my throat to have a look around.

The first time I did it I had to come in a day or two before the procedure and this nasty administrative lady read me all these documents releasing them from liability, it was something like 20 pages long. So now I had two unlikeable people involved in this procedure. Then, after the procedure I would be scheduled with the doc to go over the results. Well, I did this twice and each time I had to sit in the waiting room for way over an hour while other people came in after me and got in before me. And oh yeah, when I finally got in to see him he didn't give me any important information, basically rude as hell and all the time I'm saying to myself what a waste of time, even thinking this was possibly a scam.

So, for the 3rd time they of course wanted me to come in to sign all the paperwork again and the day before that I sent them an email cancelling that appointment. They never even acknowledged my email nor did they ever contact me ever again. It was all covered by insurance so I didn't have to do anything and just went on with my life. Occasionally I have to take Omeprazole for a few days but other than that no problems.

I used to get food ‘stuck' in my throat often, a ENT Doc took a look down my throat with fiber optic camera, found out I had polyps on my Larnyx, could have been growing there 10-15 years, and they were obstructing - they removed them, gave me the HPV shot in each larnyx, and I was good for about 8 years, then it grew back on one side, same procedure, 10 years on no more symptoms.

Good article.
I have a full blood panel done every year, including PSA. Not a blip for the last 25 years. If things change, I'll try other therapies. Considering other medictions which can affect the kidneys and liver, I'm pretty cautious, especially with regard to NSAIDs which is all I can take here as the stuff I used to take is considered "naughty" over here so I put up with the pain and protect my hepatorenal functions.
I was without my omeprazole for ten weeks months when working overseas (I forgot to get extras and where I ended up didin't have a shop, let alone a pharmacy) but I managed to source a probiotic through the US which I took first thing in the morning. I didn't eat until I'd been up for two or three hours and that also helped.
Coffee, alcohol and smoking - three of the five basic food groups 😉 - also have a negative affect on one's guts. Although during those ten weeks I had no access to alcohol, the coffee was crap, and I don't smoke.

I love coffee and have 2 each day. Omeprazole does help but like all meds, it has side effects. The gut microbiome is about the most important body system we have, and it effects all others. I've always eaten very healthy but it took that H Pylori to send things sideways for quite awhile. I drink a lot less than I did before, which was mostly wine, with a little beer and tequila, as it does affect that gastro area. I think some can get away with using some meds long term but you really don't know unless you monitor your levels.

I seem to be travelling well so far. I have a pretty sedentary lifestyle to due mobility issues, and I could afford to lose 15-20lb which would, no doubt alleviate my BP as well but as for long-term side effects: nil. Knock on wood.

Yep, do whatever you can to make your life easier. Living healthy is the hardest thing a person can do. Besides finding a decent partner.

Check what other medications you’re taking and their side effects. Some might be the cause or are making it worse. I was on low dose Tadalafil 5mg for enlarged prostate and suffered from Gerd. When I stopped taking it 2 years later and just last month, not one attack! My doctor had already changed some medications he thought might be aggravating it such as low dose asprin.

i managed to get rid of mine with lanzoprazole and carefull, dieting, less strong coffee and less spicy food, its mostly ok now buti have to swig some gaviscon some nights .i take a coated asprin so it doesnt flare up.i use a ganuler coffee which isnt that good but strong coffee can cause a flareup ,so its a balancing act wth your food intake

PPIs like omeprazole aren’t ideal for long-term use. For occasional stomach-acid control, I take famotidine, which is available over the counter in Thailand in 20 mg and 40 mg tablets. I usually take 20 mg once or twice a day as needed. It isn’t as strong as Nexium, omeprazole, or other PPIs, but it doesn’t potentially damage the kidneys or suppress stomach acid as much, which may reduce some of the long-term concerns with using PPIs, including effects of reduced B12 absorption.

I also think stress and anxiety are major triggers for stomach problems and excess acid. Certain foods like coffee, alcohol, can make things worse once the stomach has already been irritated but usually aren't the main cause. Some people say consuming apple cider vinegar daily can help too.

When stress triggers my symptoms, they can sometimes continue for weeks or even a couple of months after the stress has passed. The stomach’s nervous system can remain sensitive after being triggered, so relaxation and reducing stress can make a big difference in getting things back to normal.

I had GERD for a few years back in the late 90s and early 2000's and I was put on omeprazole by my very good doctor in New Zealand and it worked for a while, until it didn't. Furthermore the stress in my job as a Chief Manager Investments for a major bank just got worse and there was nothing I could do about it, or so I thought.

I did not drink coffee, nor was I a heavy drinker or smoker, my condition was purely down to stress and the last gastroscopy my doctor gave me showed that I had Barrett's oesophagus, which can lead to oesophageal cancer, and he told me that I should quit my stressful job or I would probably be dead within the year.

I did quit my job, sold my house and car and wine collection and moved here to Phuket, still taking the omeprazole, but decided to look elsewhere/at other medications to see what I could find, and that's when I found d-limonene capsules, a natural cyclic terpene and major component of citrus peel oils, and there has been some scientific/medical research done on this particular remedy and it appeared to work in helping cure GERD in many cases.

So I stopped my omeprazole and got onto d-Limonene capsules (1000 mg per day) and gradually over a short/medium period of time my Gerd got progressively better until it disappeared completely.

On a visit to NZ a couple of years later I went to see my doctor and he wanted to give me a checkup to look at my oesophagus, as regards the Barrett's oesophagus condition I had, and he was absolutely amazed that it had disappeared completely, and he really couldn't believe it, stating that he was treating a friend of his with Gerd, and that he would do some research on d-limonene and put his friend on it straight away, mainly as a result of my condition disappearing completely.

Just to add to this when I had Gerd, I was told to stop eating spicy foods (which I love), drinking red wine, which I also love, and stay away from various other foods which were quite acidic – – well, after the d-limonene capsules I'm happy to report that I can eat whatever I want and not have any Gerd symptoms whatsoever and have been free of this for around 15 years now!!

As I said there has been research on this and the results are very encouraging, and it worked for me and it may work for others. No harm in giving it a try.

If someone wants to try a completely natural approach to managing GERD, without developing a dependence on medication, they could consider taking apple cider vinegar along with Saccharomyces boulardii probiotics, which help provide a healthy balance in the digestive system. They could try taking both a couple of times a day for a month and see whether they notice any improvement.

At the same time, it may be helpful to eliminate or reduce anything that could increase stomach sensitivity or acid production, such as coffee, caffeine in general, alcohol, cigarettes, or other forms of nicotine. They could also consider adding cannabis for an additional calming effect on the stomach.

It’s also important to work on reducing stress and anxiety and getting regular exercise. If you’re overweight, losing some weight may also help reduce GERD symptoms.

As a follow up to my post about d-limonene, I searched my files for some info on it as regards using it to combat/fight/cure Gerd, and found a few (lost others from various computer "cleaning" exercises) so have included those here, but there is more info online if one cares to search for it.........

Gerd is caused by eating too large portions of high fat & calorie food and then lying down on the couch to watch TV too quickly.

Reduce portions. Allow 4 hours before lying down. Fast one day a week. Have you noticed no Gerd symptoms on fasting day? If not, why not 😀

When you lay down to watch TV or go to sleep, lay on your left side.

I'm sure you do this already, but maybe worth mentioning, avoid any fatty foods, drink plenty of water, exercise daily, and avoid lying down after eating.

Try cutting back on tea and coffee and a glass of clove water drank over 3 days cured my gerd acid reflux

Not popped a pill in months

Dear Mr. Rams 86,

I have a Health Shop for natural and alternative medicine since 24 years in Pattaya.

GERD is a problem, we can handle it.

I personally suffered from GERD... I went through the whole hospital treatment process. Today I know that these medications are extremely harmful (omeprazole, antacids, and others).

If you would like to know more, please contact me at my business email address siam-health "at" gmx.com or my contact address here, to schedule an appointment. Important note: I do this professionally as a business... so you will have to pay for it... but don't worry, I'm good, not only for handle GERD.

Is d-limonene OTC or from a doctor ?

OTC @superal and available from the likes of Lazada and similar. I took the 1000mg size capsules (as I recall) although there are 500mgs available.

A bit more info for those interested......for a while one can experience orange flavoured burps but they soon go away along with the effects of GERD!! My doctor (and surgeon) in New Zealand was amazed that there was no sign whatsoever of Barretts Oesophagus, and I was completely cured of it! Wonderful, and have never had any GERD symptoms in the last 15 years, and I eat spicy food, chillies and drink red wine and Port!!!
