But but but prostitution doesn't exist in Thailand

You'll find that the number of sex workers would drop dramatically.

These poor girls don't choose to have an old, fat, smelly foreigner on top of them to earn a living, they do this work to provide for their family.

These girls would much prefer to be living in the village with their children and their families

Ummm it's a job to them. Just a job. Does a livestock breeder choose to stick his arm elbow deep into a bull's rectum to cause ejaculation for breeding purposes? Does a farmworker choose to step in and shovel smelly manure all day for a pittance? Does a pathologist choose to cut open decayed rotting corpses of murder victims for a living, and a right good one?

The girls/ladyboys/guys DO in fact choose to have an old, fat, smelly foreigner on top of them to earn a living, they choose do this work to provide a good lifestyle, pay for their surgeries, to escape abject dirt poverty, AND provide for their family. "Living in the village" does not provide them anything but a meager menial existence, which they choose to escape, and their families often pressure them into the profession. They regularly spend time with family, they take time off when they feel like it, they are not enslaved, they are not "poor girls". You should see some of the cars and apartments these girls keep. You don't get around much, do you?

Jonathan, tell me how you came about living in Thailand.

Let me guess, you came here as a sex tourist, having only travelled between your home country and Thailand.

I reckon I nailed it.

In the end it's all about money 🤑

Why would some girls work on the farm hard work and low money when her friend in Pattaya Phuket or else where earn big money and does not have to work hard

Plus might meet a Foreign husband to provide a good future for them

Thai Government needs to provide more incentives for the young people of Thailand not to work in Pattaya or Phuket as call girls /boys

From your bar stool vista in Soi Bukaew .....where, you would have us believe, the hundreds of fuglies earn far more than the "bt12,000 " salary from Big C !

The slim pretties get to choose which foreigners they participate with.

Forget this Pattaya nonsense and see what's happening in every village in the country .

A historic timeline for a woman I used to know:

4000 baht a month making shoes

6000 baht a month in shoe factory as a security guard (sic as she was 5 foot nothing)

9000 baht a month if willing to dance naked in Nana.

This was back when bars actually paid salaries.

Good luck with that proposal

I first began visiting Thailand while working in Japan and Hong Kong. I played a lot of our friend RockyRoad, traveling all around the country. In virtually every city or town of sufficient size, there were brothels catering to local Thais. They were not hard to spot...girls sitting outside beckoning local men. It isn't just "fat, smelly old farang" in Pattaya who serve as customers in Thailand.

My second point is that many women join not to take care of a child, but because the money is significant. In my non-entertainment business I employ several young Thai females. I know from them---their friends---that today many young women choose to enter the field because they like the money. Some are uni students serving as paramours of local politicians and military types. Some work the agogos of Nana and Soi Cowboy. They use the income to pay for a lifestyle that a job working the counter at KFC (~10,000 baht/month) simply cannot cover. An attractive young woman can earn more than the "old, fat, smelly farang" she services. When even "good women" hear their friends are making 200,000 or more in a Nana agogo, there is temptation.

I do not know the percentages, but I'm willing to bet the % of mothers working in the major agogos is quite a bit less than it was 10-20 years ago. The Thai fertility rate is way down from a decade or two ago, and that likely covers young women who might be fodder for the entertainment industry. The incentive now is that agogo work is one of the few ways a young woman can keep up with inflation. Very attractive women can make $60-120K a year in the trade, or else $4K a year working at KFC. Were I one of those women, I cannot say I wouldn't choose Nana over KFC.

I also think there is less social stigma to working that field. Other than the hi-so elite, most Thais are struggling and in heavy debt. They understand why young women might be tempted by such work. Perhaps the few remaining folks who look down on such women are hi-so wives of men who probably have paramours on the side. Whatever the view was in the past, I think it's a virtue signaling kind of hypocrisy that claims the majority of Thai society still looks down on bargirls and massage workers, at least in the major cities.

Of course they do it for the money, and indeed 200,000 per month is not impossible for a good looking Thai girl. However, even in the provinces mothers chide their daughters not to get tattoos, so most Thais most likely do look down on sex workers. Only a minority would view it as a respectable way to earn a living or see nothing wrong with it. City or countryside.

Objectively speaking there is a lot wrong with it obviously. Whether in Thailand or Europe or the US or Africa. Prostitution is a woman selling her box for money, that's not healthy for her, disease is a major risk, it's not healthy for her boyfriend or partner, and it is subverting all moral values society holds dear. There is a lot wrong with prostitution. I disagree with Nietzsche on this.

It's a high paying job everywhere in the world, except for the hogs and hippos who think they don't need to put the effort in to look sexy. (pun intended).

Nothing wrong with earing a good living as a hooker.

The sexy spinner with half a brain earns easily 300-400000 baht per month, sponsor money included.

Many work as a free lance prostitute after university and even after the daily office job. It is a hard life, but they like it because it is big money. Who can blame them?

Pretty much everyone, mother, father, brother, sister, friend, bank manager, everyone in society really.

To this day porn actresses hide their real name and want to fly under the radar, for the most part. Society does not accept sex workers, not in the West and certainly not in Thailand.

As anyone with half a brain knows, there is a lot wrong with prostitution and especially making a living from it. Disease, nuisance, even murder, all come with the territory. There is a reason why society frowns on prostitution. In the West and in Thailand.

What is the difference between an old, fat, smelly foreigner molesting a young girl, but labelling her his girlfriend and an old, fat, smelly foreigner doing the same thing, but labelling her a prostitute?

Are they not both sex tourists in your opinion? if you consider that they are not both sex tourists, can you explain to me the difference?

I have bashed and always will bash foreigners like yourself who have only travelled from their home country to Thailand.

Those that have only come to Thailand as sex tourists, shame on them.

Do you differentiate between those who fly in from countries in which they work, as opposed to their home countries?

I hope this post is found to be acceptably neutral. 😊

The sex workers should be required to have STD testing weekly like the Philippines.

I'm sure there are high class hostesses in Thailand to satisfy high spending travellers.

Oh are you referring to the two week “millionaires” Who show up and brag they are rich?.

Here’s the other option go work in a shrimp factory for 10 hours a day and make 300 baht a day and live in a cement block with 11 of your closet friends with zero days off.

There is no good life unless ur parents are well off and can afford to send the girls to a university and even then there are 25,000 graduates looking for jobs (google)

Imo I don’t fault the girls for trying to support their family’s. The dead beat husband or boyfriend has already abandoned them

Most folks on this forum (I am assuming) can handle their finances and can spout away about the girls that choose the sex trade because none of us (just guessing) have been in a position with no money.

So if they need to do it, don’t criticize them for it is what I want to say. That’s it. Throw all the spears you want

Did you ever read profiles of freelancers on dating apps?

Some of them write stuff like "I don't like men who look down on my profession" or sth along those lines.

So that means there must be some farangs virtue signaling / harassing these women on their profiles and telling them their line of work is unethical.

Born again Christians maybe?

It's pretty funny.

What is "a lot" wrong in your estimation?

Murder is extremely rare. Maybe more precautions should be taken.

Some men murder their wives too. Does it mean marriage should be banned?

Disease can be controlled.

It's not accepted in society because it conflicts with societal "norms" ie marriage.

That's the main and most important reason.

It has way more integrity than the hordes of "fake relationships" out there. Where guys are paying their gfs just enough so they don't run off with a guy who pays them a little more, and there's hardly any real connection.

For a start prostitution carries severe health risks, both for the prostitute and the client. It spreads disease.

It has mental and psychological consequences for the woman engaging in it, trauma and so on, on top of the violence that can happen which includes murder.

It preys on men, whose libido and sexual needs make them open to exploitation by women.

It disrupts public order, just witness Pattaya walking street, it is a strain on public resources.

Unregulated commercial sex correlates with higher societal transmission rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and places a heavier burden on public healthcare systems.

It has a negative effect on property values.

You could go on and on.

If you just look at the financial benefits for those doing it, you could defend robbers, blackmailers and all kinds of other criminals on the same basis, they're getting financial benefit from it.

Very, very few cases today. Used to be brokers going to the villages.

Today, the rural society looks down on anyone who would traffick their child or the child of others. They would be ostracised. And the girl herself would do a runner.

10 hours ago, Sir Dude said:

I don't think the authorities really know what to do about this, so they just ignore it, and have their cake and eat it by officially saying it's illegal but effectively looking the other way because it is such a revenue generator that they dare not mess with. It not only acts a source of money for thousands of women and their improverished families, plus the money is spread over the whole country and local economies in the form of remittances, it draws in money for lots of other workers and industries that would suffer without it, such as restaurants, hotel, taxis, tours to all sorts of other services that tourists require.

The caveat is that to make it legal is awkward for the international image of Thailand and future tourist perceptions (which they are clearly trying to manipulate to something different now), but also the practicallity of legalising it and giving adult industry workers the benefits and rights of other professions, whilst being a complete nightmare to tax or to even break even on it as it is notoriously a cash business and transactions are almost impossible to verify or track. Legalising it would end up costing the government far more than it could ever hope to bring in from it... so the easy answer is to just leave it as is. The idea of decriminalizing the trade sounds sensible and noble (and I'm not saying either side is correct), but the logistics and effects of doing so are far more complicated than most think, along with the potential disruption, unforseen results, and cost to the taxpayer it might cause... personally, I just don't think the governments wants to grasp this nettle and has more urgent issues to try to fix. After legalising cannabis and the mess that made with the U-turns etc., I doubt there is much appetite for such lofty crusading and grand changes at the moment... and importantly too, it might not be a vote winner as the there could be a backlash from the predictable sections of society.

You mean the ones that video

Robbers is a bit of a stretch.

Men are paying willingly.

It may not ideal, but the world we live in is not ideal either.

Men pay willingly because they are thinking with their testicles, men after all are victims of this huge handicap, a huge sex drive, due to massive testosterone amounts. So prostitutes are using and abusing men for financial gain, because men are cursed with this disability, this massive sex drive. It's like robbing a disabled person.

On that count alone prostitution is reprehensible. It abuses men. Financially mostly.

Yeah, but by that logic you could argue that McDonald's is preying on obese men with no willpower.
