Cambodia powers ahead with EV charging drive

Cambodia’s state utility Electricité du Cambodge (EDC) has unveiled plans to back more than 400 electric vehicle charging stations nationwide, marking a major step in the country’s clean transport ambitions.

The initiative, supported by an initial $10 million government allocation, will see fast‑charging points installed along primary highways and in public areas. The aim is to provide reliable 20‑ to 30‑minute charging for cars and motorbikes, easing range anxiety for drivers and bolstering confidence in the growing EV market.

Minister of Mines and Energy Keo Rottanak stressed the importance of state‑led investment, noting that relying solely on private firms to build infrastructure for heavy freight and logistics would be unrealistic. “EDC will roll out large investments to ensure that all major roads in our country are equipped with fast‑charging stations,” he said.

The push comes amid surging demand: more than 6,000 new EVs were registered in the first half of 2026, bringing the total to over 15,000. Officials say consumers are increasingly drawn to lower running costs and zero emissions, while global automakers including BYD, Toyota and Hyundai are investing in Cambodian assembly plants.

With eight factories already operational and more under construction, the government hopes the charging network will accelerate adoption and position Cambodia as a regional hub for electric mobility. Results will be closely watched as the country seeks to balance rapid growth with sustainable energy solutions.
