Afternoon storms forecast across southern Vietnam

Southern Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh City, is forecast to experience showers and thunderstorms from Wednesday afternoon into the evening, with rain likely to coincide with the rush hour.

Storms expected from early afternoon

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said a wind convergence zone would bring rain to Ho Chi Minh City and other southern localities between 1pm and 8pm on 12 August. Thunderstorms are expected to affect about one-third of the region.

Most rainfall is forecast to be moderate, with only a low chance of heavy rain. However, thunderstorms may produce lightning, whirlwinds and strong wind gusts, creating localised hazards even where rain totals remain limited.

Heat continues across northern and central regions

Northern Vietnam will remain hot, with temperatures generally reaching 35-37 degrees Celsius and exceeding 37 degrees in some places. Similar conditions are expected from Thanh Hoa to Da Nang and from eastern Quang Ngai to Gia Lai.

Forecasters expect temperatures in northern Vietnam to ease from 14 August, while hot conditions will continue in central areas. The combination of high temperatures, low humidity and increased electricity demand also raises the risk of fires and electrical incidents in residential areas.

Residents and visitors in Ho Chi Minh City and southern provinces should carry rain protection and allow extra time for afternoon journeys, particularly during the evening commute. Avoid sheltering beneath trees or exposed structures during lightning and strong gusts, and take care on flooded or slippery roads. Travellers heading north or through central Vietnam should plan for intense heat, stay hydrated and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
