Strait of Hormuz becomes the latest flashpoint

Iran has declared that the Strait of Hormuz remains under its “control and management”, directly challenging President Trump’s claim that the US now has “total control” of the crucial waterway and his warning that Washington may “keep it”. The confrontation comes as Vice President JD Vance says the administration’s key objectives are keeping energy prices down and preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, while oil shipments remain heavily disrupted and US crude is around $81 a barrel. At the same time, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says the US can maintain its naval blockade of Iran “indefinitely”, suggesting Washington has no immediate plans to back away from its pressure campaign.

US carrier deployment enters dangerous new phase

The USS Abraham Lincoln has now spent more than 260 days at sea, supporting the US war against Iran, amid growing reports of supply shortages, food and plumbing problems and mounting mental-health concerns among sailors. The Pentagon strongly disputes the reports, with US Central Command insisting the crew remains resilient after more than 10,000 aircraft flights and the expenditure of 1.5 million pounds of ordnance. But the Navy is already moving the USS George Washington toward the Middle East, potentially to relieve the exhausted Lincoln, which highlights just how prolonged the American military commitment has become. Hegseth says he wants crews rotated home as quickly as possible — but simultaneously says the Iranian blockade can continue indefinitely.

Gaza peace push faces another major obstacle

Jared Kushner is preparing to travel to Jerusalem and Cairo next week with former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and senior Trump envoy Nickolay Mladenov as Washington tries to revive its Gaza peace plan. The proposed deal calls for Hamas to disarm while Israeli forces gradually withdraw, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the current 15-point framework, insisting there will be no Israeli withdrawal until Hamas is genuinely disarmed. The delegation will therefore face a difficult task: persuading Israel and the mediators to accept a path forward while Hamas's weapons remain the central sticking point.
