I used to occasionally work with Thai journalists, and the BP writer once made three factual errors in his opening paragraph. That takes some doing!

I get the BP delivered every day. Nothing like as interesting or hard hitting as it once was, but I enjoy the crossword puzzle and the word games. Keeps my old brain ticking over.

They were not that great to begin with. A few swipes and a deletion took care of the problem.

I signed up for the 'discounted' first month. The breaking point will be if they still have all the annoying ads that require dealing with. I find it useful to not be as clueless about the country I live in even though I find much of the contents superficial. It helps being a bit more responsive to my wife's comments and questions and allows us to discuss current events here.

Even a few improvements would make it more useful to me, e.g. a simple map of the province location or district in Bangkok they are discussing would be helpful context.

Then again, I am willing to pay for my media when it actually reports some news or entertainment (New York Times, YouTube Premium).

You can criticize any newspaper’s content, writing, or editing if you like but it’s a damned tough business to be in these days. And with all the AI and the news aggregators plagiarizing content , you can’t blame them for trying to go the paywall route. I don’t think papers like NYT or WaPo will ultimately win in court against the AI companies. If they do it will be a reprieve but maybe not a final victory.

I subscribed to the print edition many years ago, delivery was haphazard and it was actually better to just run into town and buy. Then it got more and more expensive. I tried the digital, not worth the cost. The little newsletter was ok, not enough but ok. I sent a nice comment, with very few 4 letter words. I would suggest all send a nice little comment about how you feel. Not that it would do any good. But at least they would know why nobody is reading their newsletter anymore. I would pay that asked for price for the digital newspaper.

Some of the articles are behind a paywall — it is hard to survive on adverts only these days, most people needs a salary when working — the paywall offer includes less adverts on open pages. If Bangkok Post then is worth 99 baht per month is another questen; however, it's modest $3...

Same with my home old newspaper company Chronicle old school and I understand the times daily paper like .25 love morning coffee 2 great cups religious get up early routine read everything. Today you want a paper not at news racks stores $3.50 you lucky there is 8 pages, Sunday issues use to be over an inch thick.

Although, I been here 20 years use to log on each morning SFGATE, online, get on forum to discuss current events and Sports easily 6 years back all of a sudden they did what Bangkok Post just did.

What I have found is for the first half of the day the main pages as well as Opinion , Business etc are behind a patwall, then at some point during the day the main page was no longer behind the paywall, and finally in the evening much of them main page is once again behind a paywall.

I miss Roger Crutchley too, but thb99 is too high a price value-wise and remember - that is 1st month only as it then trebles thereafter. The part I miss is the interraction with other readers via comments but clearly we can still express an opinion on AN so it's survivable! Otherwise so many other Thai news sites in English language give decent news, The Nation, Thaiger, Khaosod, Matichon all of which compare more favourably for content than BP.

I can recall the time when we were expressly forbidden from including online links to BP articles on here at their insistence. So, effectively, we're now back to that era, then.

Our local gai yang lady seller is the only news outlet I subscribe to. She gets up in the wee hours to prepare the chicken and listens to the news for 2 hours, local and international. She then regurgitates it to her customers while waiting for their orders. Has moved way beyond local gossip and taken things to the next level.
