Heavy rain warning issued for northern Vietnam

Northern and north-central Vietnam face several days of heavy rain from Monday night, with forecasters warning of urban flooding, flash floods and landslides.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting expects a tropical convergence zone to bring rain and thunderstorms from 17 to 21 August.

Rainfall set to intensify

Northern Vietnam and provinces from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh could receive 30-60mm from Monday night into Tuesday, with some locations above 100mm. From Tuesday to Friday, totals of 120-250mm are forecast across northern Vietnam and from Thanh Hoa to northern Quang Tri, with local falls above 350mm.

Overall totals could reach 150-300mm, and exceed 450mm in some places. Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Lao Cai, Phu Tho, Son La, Hung Yen, Ninh Binh, Nghe An and Ha Tinh are among the areas highlighted.

Flood and landslide risk

Officials warned that more than 100mm within three hours could cause rapid urban flooding and dangerous conditions in mountain areas, including flash floods on smaller rivers and streams.

Travellers should allow extra time for flights, trains and road journeys, particularly around Hanoi and routes through northern or upland provinces. Those staying near rivers, hillsides or low-lying streets should follow local warnings and avoid driving through flooded roads.
