Vietnam Post launches tourist-focused mobile service

Vietnam Post has entered the mobile market with a new virtual network aimed at helping foreign visitors get online quickly during trips to Vietnam.

The new service, Pottel, is designed for international tourists who need data for navigation, bookings, messaging and other everyday travel needs. It offers a simplified activation process and packages intended for different lengths of stay.

New option for visitors

Vietnam Post has developed the Pottel brand, its products, distribution network and customer service, while Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group provides the underlying network infrastructure.

The launch gives travellers another possible way to arrange connectivity after arrival. Mobile data is particularly important for visitors using maps, ride-hailing, translation, hotel bookings and digital payments, although customers will still need to compare package prices, coverage and activation requirements before choosing a service.

Vietnam’s virtual mobile market

Pottel is a mobile virtual network operator, or MVNO. Such companies provide voice, text and data services without holding their own radio spectrum; instead, they buy capacity from established carriers and sell it under their own brands.

Vietnam already has five MVNO operators: iTel, Wintel, Local, Vnsky and FPT SIM. Government data put MVNO subscribers at about 2.65 million in 2023, or 2.1% of all mobile users, with a target to lift that share to 5% by 2028.

Competition is tight because Viettel, VNPT/VinaPhone and MobiFone have extensive nationwide coverage and low-cost data plans. Vietnam Post said the new service forms part of a broader strategy to expand its digital ecosystem beyond traditional postal work.

What it means for foreigners in Vietnam

For tourists and short-term visitors, Pottel may eventually provide another locally focused SIM option. Its usefulness will depend on where it is sold, how easily foreigners can complete registration, and how its data packages compare with established providers. Visitors should still check passport-registration requirements and coverage for their intended destinations before buying.
