Pedestrians on a busy Ho Chi Minh City street are being pushed onto the road after eateries and parking areas took over large sections of the pavement, a Tuoi Tre News report has found.

Footpaths taken over

Along Cach Mang Thang Tam Street in Hoa Hung and Nhieu Loc wards, businesses begin placing tables and chairs on the pavement at about 5pm each day. The activity extends beyond shopfronts, narrowing or eliminating the space intended for people walking.

Some of the same pavements are also being used to park customers’ motorbikes. Staff at venues were seen directing riders onto the sidewalk before arranging the vehicles there.

Residents raise safety concerns

A local resident told Tuoi Tre that the practice had continued for a long time. With the footpath fully occupied in places, pedestrians have little choice but to step into traffic.

The issue matters especially for visitors, older residents and families unfamiliar with local traffic conditions. A short walk can become more hazardous where people must share the carriageway with motorbikes and cars.

What it means for foreigners in Vietnam

Those walking through central Ho Chi Minh City should allow extra care around busy restaurant areas, particularly in the evening. Where the pavement is blocked, use marked crossings and choose a different route where practical rather than walking along the edge of fast-moving traffic.
