Two South Korean men are due to stand trial in Ho Chi Minh City next week over the killing of a South Korean restaurant owner during a dispute at a karaoke venue in late 2024.

Trial set for August 25

Kim Jin, 31, and Kang Yo Han, 30, have been indicted for murder and will appear at the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court on August 25. Prosecutors say the charge carries potential penalties ranging from 12 to 20 years in prison to life imprisonment or the death penalty.

The case relates to a dispute after an LED screen was damaged at a restaurant on Tran Hung Dao Street. Authorities say the argument escalated and Kim and Kang later entered the room where the owner and manager were present.

Allegations and compensation claims

Prosecutors allege that Kim struck the owner with a metal nitrous oxide canister. The owner died, while the manager was hospitalised with injuries assessed at 87%.

A representative for the dead man’s family is seeking more than VND5.2 billion in compensation, while the manager is seeking more than VND3.1 billion. The defendants’ families have made partial compensation payments, according to the indictment.

What it means for foreigners in Vietnam

The case is a reminder that serious criminal allegations are handled through Vietnam’s courts regardless of nationality. Visitors and residents involved in disputes should seek to de-escalate and contact police or consular support where appropriate, rather than attempt to resolve violence themselves.
