A Chinese woman escaped from a car in Kamphaeng Phet late on Sunday night 23 August 2024, after four Thai men reportedly abducted her from a Bangkok hotel and drove her towards the Myanmar border, police said.

The woman fled from a black Nissan Teana on Ratchadamnoen Road in tambon Nai Muang, Muang district. Her hands were still tied when she approached local residents for help, according to media reports.

She was taken to hospital for treatment for injuries sustained during the reported abduction.

Escape on Ratchadamnoen Road

The woman told people who assisted her that four Thai men had taken her from a hotel in Bangkok. She said they were transporting her to a border area.

Police later said they believed the group intended to take her to Mae Sot district in Tak province, which borders Myanmar. Officers said she might then have been taken across the border into Myanmar.

The escape happened in Kamphaeng Phet, a province north of Bangkok, while the group was travelling towards the western border district.

Two suspects arrested

Police tracked the Nissan Teana to tambon Lan Dokmai, also in Muang district, Kamphaeng Phet, and arrested two men.

The suspects are aged 24 and 41 and are natives of Mae Sot district in Tak. Two other suspects fled before police could detain them.

No names for the woman or the suspects were released bt authorities, and no further details were given about the suspected motive or how the reported abduction began at the Bangkok hotel, as the investigation continues.

I used to pop over into Myanmar now and again while traveling near border areas years ago.....now one might get a rap on the head and press ganged into scamming centres!

This incident will reduce the number of Chinese tourists to Thailand by a million or two, they are very sensitive to this kind of stuff.

Indeed- especially if the story is picked up by a popular influencer

I hope we eventually learn more details about this, because it's pretty odd. There have been numerous cases of Chinese kidnapped for ransom by other Chinese, and of foreigners lured to Thailand with fake job offers and then taken to scam compounds in neighboring countries, but I've never heard of a tourist being randomly abducted by Thais.

It's a jungle out there.

To be expected, when you have that many visa classes than anyone can live here, or they just fly in / cross a border for an automatic visa exemption and overstay.

Then, add corruption here into the mix and it's a free for all.

Four held after Chinese woman escapes car in Kamphaeng Phet

Four Thai men have been charged after a Chinese woman allegedly abducted in Bangkok escaped from a moving car near a police checkpoint in Kamphaeng Phet on 25 August.

The woman, who was injured and had allegedly been restrained, ran to nearby residents for help after being pushed from the vehicle as it fled through the checkpoint in Mueang district, police said.

Police at Mueang Kamphaeng Phet Police Station arrested Somkiat, 41, Suchart, 41, Kittiporn, 24, and Kittisak, 22. The men are from Mae Sot and Phop Phra districts of Tak province.

All four have been charged with jointly detaining and confining another person, and jointly causing bodily harm. They deny the allegations.

Escape at the checkpoint

Police said a black sedan drove through the checkpoint before slowing down and opening its rear door. The Chinese woman, whose hands were tied, was pushed onto the road.

Despite her injuries, she was able to get up and seek help from people living nearby.

The woman told investigators she had travelled intending to go to Singapore, after visiting Thailand first. During her flight, she said she met a woman who told her she had a Chinese friend living in Thailand and persuaded her to meet that person after arriving.

After staying at a Bangkok hotel, the woman said a sedan collected her. The car later stopped near the hotel to pick up three additional men, at which point she believed she had been deceived.

Police examine possible border link

According to her account, she tried to resist and leave the vehicle but was restrained, with her hands tied. She said one of the men struck her in the mouth with an elbow, causing injuries, before her head was covered with a cloth.

When the vehicle reached Kamphaeng Phet and she spotted the police checkpoint, she called for help, believing it was her only opportunity to escape. Police said the driver then sped through the checkpoint.

Investigators suspect the men may have been hired to take her towards the Mae Sot border area in Tak, where she could potentially have been forced into illegal work. They are seeking to establish who allegedly arranged the abduction and whether others were involved.

So this is still going on and very scary. No wonder the Chinese are taking it seriously and are scared to come to Thailand. Don't blame them. If they travel independently - like it appears she was - then the kidnapper gangs are targeting lone travelvers.

not if you're a criminal or fugitive from the law. LOS has been a haven for those sorts for a while now.

I'ts all over tencent news and gone viral now. Watch Chinese tourism plummet. My Chinese wife already has messages from the family saying we should reconsider living in Thailand....

Exactly the kind of crime the Thai authorities are poo-panty about, as it will gain traction in China and visitor levels will take a hit, thus revenues does too.

The Thai courts need to start making an example of those who commit serious crimes like this to get back confidence and also act as a deterrent... none of the 50% off the sentence for admitting it etc. or quietly releasing people once the news cycle has move on and they think no-one is watching, which is just ludicrous and happens all the time.

However, the rot is everywhere in all countries now as people don't want to work, are more desperate, desire money more than at any time in the past, and will do almost anything for it... not a healthy state of affairs.
