Motorbike Accident - Road Tax & Insurance to cover you in an accident?

Featured Replies

I've been watching a YouTuber who had a motorbike accident and he said the hospital bill cost him nothing, because when you own a motorbike, you have to pay road tax insurance of about 120 baht/year and 600 baht/year to insure your body in case you have an accident, which covers 30,000 baht of medical bills in a hospital if you have an accident and require medical treatment. Is this information correct and does it also cover you as a rider if you are renting a motorbike from someone, and you have an accident?

I have been told that also, that you are covered for 30 000 baht of medical bills.

But does it covers you for a rented bike, define rented: a proper company with bikes all taxed and insured to fully comprehensive not many of them about, if so you should be OK .

But if you rent one from some guy, not a company or anything, will the bike even be taxed and insured? If it is, will it be covered for anyone else to ride?

Our two bikes, mine and the wife's, are insured in our names only. Does it cover anyone else to ride it, i.e., me driving the wife's bike? I would say no, that 600 baht/year, that is for the minimum insurance. It will cover the said medical bill, at a government hospital, but not any repairs to the bike.

Yes its correct, happened to me

This news just makes me want to go out and buy a motorbike. I can get a 30,000 Baht insurance policy on it. That is $912 dollars equivalent U.S. I wonder if that amount would cover a motorbike accident involving brain damage, punctured lung, broken leg and a stay of over a month in the hospital? Stupid is as stupid does.

Stupid policy, I'm paying for the incompetent riders.

Should be like the West, CTP covers pillion passengers and others injured, not the rider at fault.

Yes 30k, if non fault it's around 60k but proving may be impossible.

i also have personal accident insurance which covers 200k medical

How do you go about claiming that up to 30k in medical bills? Do you pay it first then claim it against the road tax and 600b/year insurance or do you just present it to the hospital when they are asking you to pay the bill and they do the necessary and you pay nothing out of pocket?

If the up to 30k medical bills only covers the rider only if it's the owner of the bike as that's who the insurance name is in, what about a pillion passenger of the insured person? They're not covered at all?

Were you on a rented motorbike or was the motorbike owned by you and all the tax and insurance in your own name?

Does the up to 30k medical bills only cover the rider if you're the owner of the bike or will it also cover the person who has rented the bike and has an accident and requires medical treatment?

Do they pay first and claim it back later or present the documents to the hospital and there are nothing to pay the hospital out of pocket?

Two-up is way way risky.

Unlimited liability.

From my knowledge, the so called compulsory motorbike insurance is more or less fixed to the motorbike, even your name is in the policy. It covers the driving person as well as 1 passenger. The insurance even remains valid once the motorbike is sold. Attached find the conditions for a motorbike with 150cc upwards with an insurance costing ~650฿ per year. Without the insurance, you will not become the tax label from the local transport department. Tbh, some Thais can barely afford it, wherefore not every motorbike is ensured. Who rents a bike should ensure the owner or rental station has this…

Tbh2: we have an additional insurance (2+) for our used motorbikes, as I believe you probably need a hight coverage in case of having a ‘big’ accident. It covers personal injuries up to 50.000฿, means together with the compulsory insurance you have a coverage of 80.000฿,!which is a bit better. This insurance is about 5,000฿ per year. Worth or not? IMO yes!

Yes, the insurance covers anyone riding the bike, legally or illegally.

You need to make a police report on the accident and hand it to the hospital to claim.

The hospital claims direct from the insurer.
