George Town bar serves Penang-inspired cocktails

George Bar at The George Penang has introduced a series of cocktails built around locally made spirits and flavours associated with Penang, pairing drinks with a design that draws on the site's earlier history.

The bar is in the lobby of The George Penang by The Crest Collection, at the junction of Jalan Penang and Jalan Argyll. The 92-room hotel opened in 2022 on a site that once housed the Teik Bin Chinese dispensary, the Australian Hotel and later a sundry shop.

History behind the bar

Rows of drawers at the counter reference medicine cabinets used by historic dispensaries, according to the hotel's marketing communications manager, Cyrus Lim. The building itself has a colonial-inspired and Art Deco character, while the hotel's Georgian facade is a familiar feature of the surrounding streetscape.

The cocktail menu uses locally produced spirits to reflect Penang and Malaysian flavours. Raksasa Tropika combines gula melaka rum with orange, watermelon and lime juices, finished with ginger ale.

Local ingredients in the glass

Nutmeg Whisper uses nutmeg gin, nutmeg, orange and lime juices, syrup and soda. Kampung Spritz is built around craft mijiu, a Chinese-style rice wine, with rum, sour plum, triple sec and soda.

The George Mojito adds gula melaka to white rum, mint and lime. Non-alcoholic choices include Nyonya Punch with pandan, coconut syrup, coconut milk and pineapple juice, plus drinks featuring asam boi, lemon and soda.

Practical details for visitors

The bar offers a buy-one-free-one promotion on drinks from noon to 8pm daily, including public holidays. Listed prices start at RM20+ for mocktails and RM35+ for cocktails. A live band plays from 8pm to 11pm, Monday to Saturday.

What it means for foreigners in Malaysia

For visitors and foreign residents in Penang, the venue offers a central option for trying drinks built around local ingredients without leaving George Town's heritage core. As with any venue serving alcohol, customers should check current pricing, promotions and opening arrangements directly before visiting.
