One has to marvel at Putin's deliberate, slow, expert, management of this war. Outstanding preparation, careful execution and unhurried end game.

One has to marvel at your thought processes #sarcasm. You forgot to mention to date total casualties (killed and injured) in the Russia-Ukraine war are estimated to exceed 1.2 million to 2 million combined for both military forces, according to international intelligence and research assessments.

Killed AND WOUNDED. So that is a massive exaggeration.

Of course nobody knows the true death toll of either, because both Ukraine and Russia keep their death figures secret. Confirmed military deaths for Russia are around 248,000.

Regrettable of course. However, you have to consider that from Putin's perspective Russia's survival was at stake, for once Ukraine had joined NATO it would have become impossible to defend Russia by land from a tank invasion.

You are forgetting that NATO is a defensive pact.

Lol, yes we saw with the bombing of Yugoslavia how "defensive" NATO acts.

I expected you to make that comment, and you didn’t disappoint me.

NATO framed the operation as a necessary response to a humanitarian emergency and regional threat after diplomacy failed. Critics saw it as an illegal intervention that worsened the immediate crisis before producing a forced settlement. The episode remains one of the most debated uses of force in the post-Cold War era.

There is still no reason for Putin to feel threatened by Ukraine joining NATO, I think lessons were learned, and it will never again attempt humanitarian aid in such a way.

The 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia without UN Security Council authorization is the foundational operation that convinced Vladimir Putin and the Russian foreign policy elite that NATO acts as an aggressive, interventionist force rather than a purely defensive alliance.

That's just fact. Of course Putin, and all of Russia, is threatened by Ukraine joining NATO.If the vast plains of Ukraine are on the side of the invader, then Russia becomes de facto indefensible in a land invasion.

The Economist is running a story declaring Witkoff and Kushner as amateurs. I guess they just figured that out..
