Jamaica takes slavery reparations fight to King Charles

When are the Africans going to pay their share? It was the black Africans that rounded up the people and sold them on. If payment from anyone is justified, which I don't believe it is, then it should be the black African's who fed the slave trade.

who sold Africans to European traders? - Google Search

During the transatlantic slave trade, the vast majority of enslaved Africans were sold to European traders by African rulers, military leaders, and elite merchants from various coastal and interior kingdoms.

European traders rarely ventured inland to capture people themselves due to tropical diseases and strong African military resistance. Instead, they relied on local networks to bring captives to coastal trading posts.

Key African Kingdoms and Groups Involved:

  • The Kingdom of Dahomey (modern-day Benin): Highly militarised and one of the most prominent states dedicated to capturing and exporting captives.

  • The Ashanti Empire (modern-day Ghana): Used firearms acquired from Europeans to conquer neighbouring territories and supply captives.

  • The Oyo Empire (modern-day Nigeria): A dominant Yoruba state that utilized its cavalry to capture people from weaker neighboring communities.

  • The Kingdom of Kongo (modern-day Angola/DRC): Initially partnered with Portuguese traders, though its rulers later struggled to control the destabilising internal raids it caused.

  • The Imbangala and Nyamwezi: Specialized mercenary groups and mobile traders who acted as commercial intermediaries, waging wars deep inland to march captives to the coast.

The Mechanics of the Trade

  • The Gun-Slave Cycle: European traders paid for captives using highly desirable manufactured goods, most notably firearms and gunpowder, alongside textiles, alcohol, brass, and cowrie shells. This created a vicious cycle: African kingdoms needed European guns to defend themselves from rivals or expand their territory, and the only way to pay for those guns was by capturing and selling more people.

  • Existing Systems: Forms of slavery and the trading of war captives already existed across various African societies. However, the astronomical demand from European powers looking to supply labour for New World plantations completely transformed and weaponized the scale of the practice.

Historians estimate that roughly 90% of the Africans transported across the Atlantic were originally captured and sold to European ships by fellow Africans.

It’s coming home to roost. It’s about time GB returns all stolen assets from countries it invaded starting with jewels so prominently displayed on their crowns.

Jamaica or Africa?

Whatever the rights & wrongs of the past - and they were many & diverse - the poor countries NOW that move ahead are those who take matters in to their own hands (eg Burkina Faso) and get on with improving their own lives and leadership.

Hands out for compo leads nowhere good.

Anyway you are thread jacking to suit your own prejudices. This is about slavery, not colonisation. Go start your own thread, troll.

“Plus the United States “

Why you dragging us into your problem?

We have our own version.

A certain race who were never slaves in their lifetime want to be paid by a certain race who never owned slaves in their lifetime.

Appears the Jamaicans are following the path of American blacks.

Total Bullsh-t/Bullochs. Never going to happen.

Both groups failed to go after the black African tribes that sold their fellow black people into slavery.

The Whites were only the buyers. Free Market Principles of that ERA.

What are the enduring economic consequences of slavery in Jamaica?

Why should descendants of slaves deserve a payout? And why should the UK pay? Wasn't it the British that ended the slave trade?

If they really feel hard done by, better they try and go after the descendants of Arab slave traders that worked in Africa capturing and transporting them. Lots of money in the Gulf States.

And they sold them to the Arabs. Why would the Belgians, who fought bloody battles against the Arab slave traders in the Congo, be the ones to pay reparations to the Congolese?

Should the Portuguese, who brought black Africans to North America, pay damages to black Americans? For What? For bringing them to the richest country in the World where they have a hundred time more chances of success than back "home" in West Africa?

As an anecdote, an African working girl in Pattaya told me she never went with black US guys because "they hate us for selling their ancestors to the European slave traders". One of the most preposterous things I've heard in my whole life.

Why should the UK pay Now for what happened centuries ago.

Why should people now pay for something that they didn't do .

Charlie and the people now had nothing to do with what happened then..

Don't forget about the Belgians' role in the terror in the Congo. Cutting off hands? Europeans can be brutally racist.

The Europeans purchased humans as slaves and created a market. The racist Europeans need to make up for their past crimes against humanity.

Yes, the black legend, relayed and amplified by Livingstone, and Joseph Conrad's novel. The black legend was started by the British, who never forgave Leopold for his alleged pro-German stance during the Berlin Conference. Neither did the British stomach Leopold's outmanoeuvring England in the Congo through the agency of Henry Morton Stanley, a Britisher who according to England should have been on England's payroll, not on the Belgian King's.

I thought the Second World War started in 1937 when Japan, an Asian country, invaded China, another Asian country. The Second World War in Europe was started when Germany invaded Poland. The First World War was started by Austria or Serbia, take your pick.

During the peak of slavery in the U.S, 78% of slave owners were Jewish.

Given that only 1.6% of the overall population owned slaves, and Jews comprised 3.125% of the population, this suggests that 40% of Jewish individuals owned slaves, compared to just 0.35% of white individuals.

Good luck getting any cash out of them though.
Allegedly tighter than a ducks arse.
