Vietnam sends 13,500 war-remains samples for DNA testing

More than 13,500 biological samples from the remains of unidentified Vietnamese martyrs have been sent to Hanoi for DNA analysis, part of a nationwide effort to return names and histories to those lost in war.

The samples were transferred for testing as Vietnam expands its identification programme for graves with incomplete or missing records. DNA comparisons can help establish links between remains and relatives who have provided their own genetic samples.

The work is particularly difficult where remains have been buried for decades and biological material has deteriorated over time.

A nationwide identification drive

The transfer forms part of a 500-day national campaign launched in 2026 to accelerate the search, recovery and identification of martyrs’ remains.

The programme aims to recover around 7,000 sets of remains, collect samples from approximately 230,000 unidentified graves and carry out DNA analysis on about 18,000 sets of remains. It is due to run until July 2027.

Families provide vital evidence

Identification depends not only on samples from graves but also on DNA donated by relatives. Authorities are building a genetic database to match family records with samples taken from cemeteries and recovered remains.

For families who have waited generations for answers, a confirmed match can provide long-awaited closure and allow a burial place to be properly identified.
