Kalasin man found dead in Phu Faek whirlpool

Search teams have recovered the body of a 35-year-old man who went missing while looking for forest produce with friends in the Phu Faek area of Kalasin province.

Anan, from Phu Laen Chang subdistrict in Na Khu district, disappeared on the afternoon of 9 September. His body was found at 8am on 10 September in a dry whirlpool hole known locally as Kaeng E-Toi.

Search hampered by mountain terrain

The search involved several agencies, including Metta Tham Rescue's headquarters team, Muen Hin Rescue, Border Patrol Police, Forestry Department officers, Na Khu police, local officials and villagers.

Teams faced difficult conditions in the mountainous area, which has streams and numerous deep water pools. Searchers had to take extra care while entering the area.

Officials initially believe Anan may have lost his footing before being swept by flashwater into the pool and a hole beneath it, leaving him unable to get out.

The precise circumstances and cause of death remain under investigation.

Body brought down the mountain

Rescue workers had to plan the recovery carefully because of the steep and hazardous ground. The operation to bring Anan's body from the location took several hours before it reached the foot of the mountain.

Visitors planning hikes or trips into forest areas should check local weather conditions, avoid entering waterways during or after heavy rain, and use guides or notify others of their route when travelling in unfamiliar terrain.
