Vietnam reviews Grab fares and driver charges

Vietnam's competition authority asks Grab, other ride-hailing firms to provide pricing, fee info

Vietnam’s competition authority has asked Grab and other ride-hailing platforms to explain how they set passenger fares and charges deducted from drivers’ earnings.

Driver complaints trigger review

The National Competition Commission said it had received complaints from Grab driver partners over fares, commissions, fees and other deductions applied through the app.

Drivers said some customer fares appeared low or had fallen, while they still had to cover operating costs alongside platform charges. They asked for clearer information about how payments and deductions are calculated and changed.

Grab asked for documents

The commission has invited Grab to a working session and requested documents covering its fare, fee, commission and deduction policies.

Other app-based ride-hailing companies have also been asked to provide comparable information for passengers and drivers. The authority is gathering further material before deciding whether a formal competition-law investigation is warranted.

Focus on transparency

The commission said technology platforms should review their policies to ensure they comply with competition rules. Its stated aim is to improve transparency and balance the interests of passengers, drivers and platform operators.

It has also invited drivers, users and other organisations to submit objective information and documents about issues involving fares, commissions and deductions.

What it means for foreigners in Vietnam

For passengers, the review could eventually lead to clearer information about how ride prices are set. For foreign residents who drive for platforms, it may bring greater scrutiny of deductions and changes to payment policies, though no finding against Grab or any other company has yet been made.

It's almost like Communism cares more about Antisocial Capitalism than Capitalists do--their philosophy is take first, then cry and scream when workers try to get a fair deal.
