Cambodia defends hosting Myanmar leader

Cambodia has moved to justify its decision to welcome Myanmar president Min Aung Hlaing, stressing that the visit was consistent with ASEAN’s long‑standing principle of non‑interference in the internal affairs of member states.

The president was in Cambodia from 11 to 12 September, meeting Acting Head of State Hun Sen at the Solidarity Place in Phnom Penh. The talks focused on strengthening cooperation between the two countries, with agreements expected in both legislative and executive spheres.

Government spokesman Thyrith told reporters that while criticism from abroad was inevitable, Cambodia’s position was rooted in ASEAN norms. “Other nations may criticise, but Cambodia adheres to non‑interference,” he said, adding that the visit offered a chance to identify areas where bilateral cooperation had yet to reach its full potential.

He noted that Cambodia and Myanmar have maintained diplomatic relations for more than 70 years, though progress has often been slow. The current engagement, he argued, could help reinvigorate ties, particularly through parliamentary exchanges and institutional collaboration.

Addressing questions about legitimacy, Thyrith pointed out that no country has withdrawn its ambassador from Myanmar since Min Aung Hlaing assumed the presidency. He suggested that continued diplomatic presence should be considered when assessing recognition.

Hun Sen himself drew parallels with Cambodia’s past, recalling periods when its government was not recognised internationally yet remained the authority with which others ultimately engaged. For Phnom Penh, the invitation extended by King Norodom Sihamoni to Min Aung Hlaing was presented as a gesture of friendship and continuity in bilateral relations.

Criticism from other capitals, Thyrith concluded, reflected their own political frameworks. Cambodia’s stance, he said, was clear: respect for ASEAN principles and a commitment to maintaining ties with fellow members, regardless of internal disputes.
