Two teenage sisters in Phnom Penh have been sentenced to 20 years each in prison after being found guilty of murdering their grandmother in a dispute over romantic relationships.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court delivered the verdict on Friday, convicting Seng Chanboramey, 19, and her younger sister Seng Heng Sanika, 18, of premeditated murder under Article 200 of the Criminal Code. The case has shocked Cambodia, highlighting how a family disagreement spiralled into deadly violence.

The attack took place on 5 April at the victim’s home in Kandal village. According to prosecutors, the sisters stabbed their grandmother, 64‑year‑old street vendor Ty Kong, with a vegetable knife, leaving her fatally wounded. They fled the scene but were arrested the following day.

During the trial, both admitted to the killing, telling the court they had grown resentful after Kong repeatedly forbade them from having boyfriends while still at school. She had warned that relationships could distract them from their studies and jeopardise their future success. That tension, prosecutors said, escalated into the fatal assault.

Judge Hok Pov, presiding over the case, said the evidence and confessions left no doubt about their guilt. The court ruled that the sisters had acted with intent, and handed down the maximum sentence short of life imprisonment.

The case has drawn attention not only for its brutality but also for the circumstances behind it. Observers note that Cambodia’s courts rarely see such extreme crimes committed by teenagers against close family members. The sentencing underscores the judiciary’s determination to treat the crime as a serious breach of both law and social norms.

Legal experts say the ruling reflects the court’s effort to balance punishment with deterrence, sending a message that family disputes cannot justify violence. At the same time, the tragedy has sparked wider debate about generational tensions, education pressures and the role of guardianship in Cambodian households.

For now, the sisters face two decades behind bars, while their community grapples with the aftermath of a crime that began with a ban on teenage romance and ended in the loss of a grandmother’s life.
