Man Pleads Guilty to Drugging, Raping His Wife for 20 Years

A man has pleaded guilty to drugging and sexually assaulting his wife over two decades, admitting 60 offences in total.

The defendant, who cannot be named to protect the anonymity of his victim, is in his 60s and, before his arrest, lived in Stockport, Greater Manchester. He made his pleas at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court, where the woman sat in the front row among other family members.

Guilty Pleas cover Multiple Rape Offences

He admitted 60 counts, including 21 counts of rape. The charges also included allegations of sharing intimate images of his wife.

During the proceedings, the defendant entered his pleas and occasionally sobbed, according to those in court.

In June, he pleaded guilty to 15 of the charges. On Monday, he admitted the remaining 45 counts, bringing the case to full guilty pleas across the indictment.

Sexual Offences and Drug-Facilitated Assault Allegations

Prosecutors alleged a sustained campaign of abuse taking place over 20 years, including drug-facilitated sexual assaults. The defendant’s guilty pleas cover the rapes and other sexual offences set out in the case.

In addition to the assault allegations, he also previously pleaded guilty to sharing intimate photographs or film of his wife without her consent for sexual gratification.

Co-Defendants Deny Allegations

A number of other defendants were also charged in connection with the same complainant. Twelve co-defendants, named in the wider case proceedings, all deny various allegations relating to the woman.

Police said investigations into drug-facilitated sexual abuse can be complex, and that support should not depend on having complete certainty or clear memory.

Police Urge People to Seek Help if Worried

Rick Jackson, an assistant chief constable of Greater Manchester police, said the force’s focus remained on supporting the victim through a “very complex investigation”.

He added that specialist support continued for the woman and urged people to come forward if they believed they or someone they know had been affected by drug-facilitated sexual abuse.

Jackson said victims did not need proof, certainty, or a clear memory to be taken seriously. He said individuals were not expected to understand exactly what had happened or who was involved in order to report concerns or ask for help.
